Item Number Sequence

Does AutoCAD have the ability to re-sequence item numbers strictly based off the manufacturer? We do not want the panel components to have a higher priority than any of the schematic components.

For example we will have 4 Banner components listed as items 22-25, then more Banner components with much higher item numbers 58-61 because they are not referenced in the panel drawing.

If I understand you correctly, yes.

So I need to use fixed item numbers and avoid using the re-sequence item numbers tool to accomplish this?

So, I didn't understand you correctly. My bad for not reading your question properly.

No, I guess you should make some "dummy" panel symbol for those components that are only references in the schematics to get this sorted out.

I'm not in front of my computer right now, so I'm not able to be more precise.

When I encounter issues like this I do one of three things:

1. I create a footprint for the part.

2. Like Trond stated, I create a "dummy" footprint. Now this footprint block definition is on a layer that is not allowed to be plotted. This keeps it invisible when printed.

3. I tie the BOM parts to a multiple BOM on a single footprint. For example, the Lug kit and the disconnect cable for a main circuit breaker in a controls panel has catalog components all tied to one footprint, the main Circuit Breaker footprint.

It sounds like you want to sort items based on the type of part. If that is the case you could assign a value to one of the three user fields for each part and then sort on that field instead. This will only work for BOM's to file not to a table in a drawing.

Best regards,

Jeff

Learn programming, and create your own Item numbering rule. This can be done directly to the project database first, and then applied to the drawings using the AEIMPORTDB command.

I was just suggesting to Adam a possible out of the box solution to his sorting issue. If AutoCAD Electrical implemented this idea:

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-electrical-ideas/be-able-to-sort-reports-by-any-field-in-the-...

FIVE YEARS AGO Adam would not be having this issue with my suggestion.

Best Regards,
Jeff
