Files to copy for new PC ?

I am getting ready for a newly built PC here in my office. I want to copy my ACAD icons symbols and blocks that I have created through symbol builder.

Are there any others I should copy to retain my custom components ?

The answer to that depends entirely on whether you saved custom files in other locations, or not. If you let ACADE decide where to save things, then you might be OK. But, this effort needs to rope in more than just your custom symbols.

If you have made any changes to the icon menu itself, you'll need to copy those files over. This includes changes like altering the structure, adding icons, etc. If you've made any edits to the catalogs, the catalog files need to be copied over as well.

Where is your title block stored? Your templates? Those files will need to be included in all this.

What about plot settings? Ever edit your ctb or stb file? If so, those too will need to be copied. Lump the .pc3 files in with that too.

In reality, your best bet is to have your IT folks make a disc image of your current computer, and then bring all of that over to the new one after it's set up. If that option exists for you, my advice is to do it that way. Barring that, the next best thing is to make sure that the old computer is available to you for a while - say, a couple or three weeks. This will give you enough time to discover anything you might have missed.

The info for custom icons is really kept in two places. The first place is the actual menu file, this is the data that ACADE needs to go fetch the symbol. The second place is the images folder (I think), which is where the thumbnail image used by the Icon Menu dialog box is stored. You'll need to copy both of these to your new machine. Remember to do that after ACADE has been installed on it.

Probably the best way to see where your icon menu is stored is to look at your project properties. It should show you all the paths it's looking for, just find the path for 'schematic icon menu'. Remember that you'll need to copy over each menu file that you've made edits to, so don't forget about the panel menu or the pneumatic menu, for instance, if you've ever edited those. As for the thumbnails, all of them are in the same folder regardless of which menu they might be used in. Anything you've left alone, can be left uncopied. The new install has all that stuff, it's just your custom things that need to be tracked down.

Also, don't count on paths to be the same across both versions of the software. Could be a Windows thing, or an Autodesk thing, but don't make the mistake of assuming that the path used by your old install will be the same on the new machine.

Hi there,

Since you are moving to a new ACE revision it may involve more than just copying files.  I don’t know if this will work but if I were you, I would look into the MIGRATION UTILITY tool.  When the new machine is ready for you I would pull the hard drive out of the old machine and put it into a stand alone portable drive case.  That should allow the new machine to see the old drive as if it were a thumb drive plugged into a USB port.  With the new machine, open the new ACE 2024 open the Migration Utility and see if you can get ACE to migrate all your custom files and setting from the old ACE application as seen through the USB port.  If there has been any change to file format or protocol, the new ACE should make the adjustments during the migration process.

Good luck

Please mark as a solution if this works for you, kudos are always welcome
