AutoCAD Electrical 2017 Catalog Permissions

I'm in the process of migrating to 2017 and I like the Catalog Browser BUT I do have an issue.

When you hover over a catalog entry a small menu pops up with four buttons, the first of which lets you insert a symbol which you choose from the icon menu.

Is there any way to disable this?  I would like to stop users 're-assigning' their own symbols either accidentally or on purpose.  We have a mixed bag of users; some who will go off exploring (changing) options and some will change things so their life is easier.  Some of my guys will not know anything is wrong, they'll just assume whatever is there is the way it is and you'll have no idea anything is wrong until someone who does know something is wrong over the other side of the room suddenly yells out it's not doing what is did yesterday!!

Are there any permissions associated as to what you can and cannot do in the catalog?

Thanks

Hi there,

Have you considered a little training time?  It might be worth the time to bring all of your people up to speed with the tools they should know how to use.  If ACE is a major player for your tool box, it seems to me that having everyone up to speed would benefit your department more than hand cuffing the less experience to using just a few tools.

Just a thought, good luck

We do training as and where necessary to bring users up to speed with the versions as they progress but you'll always have fiddlers and the less experienced who accidentally manage to click here there and everywhere!!

We do want all our users to use the same features and functionality to ensure we have consistent look and feel to our drawings across the product range and don't really want users, regardless of experience, to have to hunt around for lost features.

Hi again,

It seems like I have seen a similar post some time ago.  If I remember right, and I probably don't, the approach was some type of network configuration.  I am not a network person so I didn't pay real close attention but you can probably find it if you nose around this board a bit.  I think the bottom line was to have all of the profile and environment files on a network server.  The effect was that each time ACE was started it would load to work environment from the network.  Each station would look the same on startup.  The user could fiddle with ACE once it was started but no matter how it was changed, on the next startup it would be back to the predefined settings from the server files.  Not sure if that would be helpful to you or not but it is just one more thing to consider.

Hope one of the network gurus can give you something a little more specific.

Good luck

If you're using the catalog in "microsoft access mode", make sure only people allowed to make changes in the catalog have read/write access to that file. Other users should only have READ-access to the file. The catalog browser reflects this with a little padlock in the corner (If I remember correctly).
