This Webinar, put on by Blue Marble, is an excellent overview of Map Projections. Don't be afraid of its length -- (2:09:53) -- it moves along quickly and is never boring. The question-and-answer part starts at about 1 hour and 20 minutes, so watch it to at least that point.

This is some good stuff. I use Global Mapper on a daily basis. Blue Marble purchased it from Mike Childs. We used to sell it, but when Blue Marble bought it, they cut us out of the loop.

It's more than that. It'll import just about any format you can think of, and let you convert it into anything else. It can create ridiculously large surfaces, and style them with hill shading, contours, elevation bands, etc. It will display dwg files, survey data, GPS files, you name it.

My favorite functionality is the ability to project to a different coordinate system with a click of a button. Then, when you export it, it will create a world and projection file for you. For the price you can't beat it.
