Data Shortcuts Project Looses File Association

A client works in Civil 3D 2017 off their local server and, per project:

• Stores all Civil 3D files in one project folder (…\A)
• Sets the working data shortcuts folder (…\A)
• Creates a new data shortcuts folder (…A\Data)
• Associates the project to multiple drawings
  • Working Folder: …\A
  • Selected Project: Data
  • Folder containing the drawings: …\A
• Creates data shortcuts in the “child” drawings
• References to the data shortcuts from within the “parent” drawing

The data shortcuts work fine for an indefinite period of time when it suddenly stops working, forcing them to re-associate the project to multiple drawings.

The default behaviour of the “broken” files is to accept the last used data shortcuts folder as the working folder. After they are re-associated the project to multiple drawings they perform normally again.

What is causing the data shortcuts association to fail? Is it a Civil 3D issue or might the cause be server maintenance tasks (indexing, for example)? Does anyone experienced similar issues or have any advice on the matter?
