Civil 3D 2017 - File size has increased by 5 times

I'm working with a Civil 3D 2017 file that has gone from around 24 MB to over 150 MB in a couple of days.  I've done purge / purge all / automatically purge orphaned data.... and it is not reducing the file size.  When I audit the drawing it hangs.

My drawing is unusable because it's so large.  I'm desperate for help - I need to finish my project by Tuesday : (

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your post.  I downloaded the file and things seem a little faster.  However, the file size is still huge and when I try to audit the drawing it just hangs.

Try removing the regapps by typing:

-purge (not "purge")

Hi,

I tried removing the regapps as you suggested, but it had no effect on the file size.  I think my drawing is corrupt, when I try auditing it, it always hangs - I've attached a screenshot.

Thanks for your suggestion, though.  I appreciate the help.

Thanks for the advice.  Is there anything I can do if the drawing is hanging on an audit?

Possibly try using RECOVER to open the file.

AUDIT may not have hung, it may just be processing an extraordinarily large amount of entries.

How long do you wait? One dwg I was testing recently took 2.5 hours to complete the Recover/Audit.

Hi Jeff - thanks for that info, I didn't realize it could take that long.  What do you recommend that I do - RECOVER or AUDIT?

Use Recover, because it automatically runs audit after the recover portion executes.

Did that work??

If not try this.

Type 'indexctl'  it should be set to '3'

Set it to '0'

audit / save / close

open the file back up and set 'indexctl' back to '3'

This fixed a drawing that I thought was corrupt recently.

Looks like corrupted drawing. See this procedure. In many situation worked well for me.

  1. Open your drawing and type WBLOCK in command line
  2. Select Entire drawing and location where you would like this Block to be placed
  3. Start a new Civil 3D drawing from your template
  4. Then Insert (Explode upon Insertion) the WBLOCKED file you created in step 2
  5. Run AUDIT, -PURGE, PURGE and save the drawing
  6. Save

I hope it helps.

I tried your indexctl suggestion.  It didn't seem to help.  Thanks for the suggestion though Smiley Happy

That's too bad. Can you post one of your files?

Thanks for your WBLOCK suggestion.  Should I follow this procedure for getting all of the Civil 3D entities, layouts, etc. into the new drawing:

https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/autocad-civil-3d/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticl...

I probably won't be able to try this today, it looks like it might take a while. I have to submit the project today, so I'm going to try and use the drawing in it's current state for now.

I'll let you know if it works Smiley Happy

When you WBLOCK your linework and import it into new drawing program will recreate these objects pretty much as they should look (given you have styles and settings). So if you follow that procedure I posted it should give you what you need.

Importing layout tabs you can do that way or utilize Design Center (Type DC command) and then drag and drop. YOu would need to have both drawings open.

Good luck.

Will WBLOCK bring the Civil 3D entities into the drawing?
