BOM from a 2D drawing

Good morning,

I am pretty sure I know the answer to this question but I need proof to educate my boss about this. It there an add-on or software capable of creating a BOM from a 2D drawing or is it only possible to have a BOM created from a 3D model?

2D what exactly? dumb lines, no, blocks with attributes and more, or ACA's AEC content, yes.

It all depends on what you have to work with and what your expectations are are at the end.

Yes they are just lines. no blocks. Just lines drawn on individual layers. My boss wants to create a BOM based on wall lengths and widths so our supers do not have to manually calculate it anymore. I do not believe this to be possible without creating a 3D file.

Dumb 3D shapes are not smarter than dumb 2D lines: neither is BOM source material.

BOM works with intelligent objects (unique blocks with attributes, AEC walls/doors/windows/Lights/ceilings etc. in ACA) in the CAD file: what you boss wants is an intern with a scale, a seat of LT, and a spreadsheet then hope for the best outcome/results.

Have you tried dataextraction?  You can leverage the model data or use 2d data from all sorts of entities and the data can be extracted to an excel file.
