xref layers

I am working with xrefs for the first time for a consultant. When I look at his drawings, instead of seeing the names of all the layers in the layer manager, I see just the name of the xref itself. Because I am working on an apartment building where I have xref'ed each unit, I have many many layers!!! How do I manage these layers. Also, when I don't want an xref to show in a viewport, I have to freeze each layer which is a big task!

Open your filters pane, if it is closed.  Select the all filter and make sure "invert filter" is not checked. For xref's unloading an xref is easier than freezing all its layers.  Also, if the xref is attached on a unique target drawing location, you just need to freeze that layer.

Unfortunately, that did not work.  I have attached the drawing so you can see the problem!

Even though you did not include the xref, I can still see the xref layers.  They are all prefixed with the name of the xref drawing name.  The format is

drawingname|layername.  Perhaps you did not look down far enough in the layer list.  Xref layers are separate from the active drawing's layers.

Opening the file, it looks to me like they're all named properly. What you may not have noticed is that AutoCAD prefixes the layer name with the file name of an xref. If you go to your Layer Manager and expand the window a bit (specifically the Name column), and drop down the Xref line in the left sidebar, you should be able to see the layer name, with the xref drawing prefixed to it.
