I received that message from one of the employees today, we recently updated to 2016.  They're all running Win7 and the license server is running Server 2012.   I've found the knowldge.autodesk.com page aobut reinstalling, but now it's happening to about 6 of the users total.  Why would this be happening to many users at the same time?

And how do I fix it without reinstalling?

Thank you for posting your question here. Does the fatal error message read "Exception in mc3.dll / mc3d.dll ARX Command"?

If so, this is a known issue that we are currently investigating.

Please try the solution in this article, which should resolve the issue for you.

This was in fact the answer with one caveat, on the affected machines, the file path listed in this article did not exist anywhere, not just under the affected users. Instead, the only way to fix it was the regedit, as the "Help > Desktopanalytics" option really didn't help since I had no idea what that meant. the only clickable "Help" I saw only brought up the help menu that would bring up that same article, so the regedit was the way to go for me.

@Anonymous  Regedit ( stands for Registry Editor) is more or less the actual inner workings of a windows ased machine.  You can get to it by holding down the "windows key+R" then type in "regedit"  and press "OK".  From there you should be able to follow the paths listed in the fix (I had to do this on a machine over here, and it worked)

The help thing through me for a loop at first too.  You don't actually go into help, next to the help button (the obvious ? in the upper right corner) you press the little down facing arrow and that pulls up a slew of options.  Supposedly it pulls up a slew of options, like I said above, one of our machines over here had practically nothing, so I had to use the registry fix on that machine.

And one other thing, for anyone else that stumbles upon this... The path to "whitelist.xml" for me was exactly listed except that it was under the "archdesk" folder, not the "bldysys" folder.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply, I'll have to check that path out and see if it's there.  I searched for the file whitelist.xml itself and nothing showed up, but it never hurts to double check.

I just double checked one the user's computers, and there is still no whitelist.xml file under the ARCHDESK path. I see an si.xml, but no whitelist.xml

Interesting.  Can you check the regedit path?  I would assume, they never allowed for usage data and so the file was never created.  I would get the analytics up and running and then fire up autocad.  It should take 2 minutes exactly from when it opens up to when it checks for that file and when it doesn't find it (assuming the analytics is turned on) it's supposed to download a good one from Autodesk's servers.

Hi @Anonymous,

It turns out the workaround for AutoCAD Architecture is slightly different for the time being. Please try this:

  • For AutoCAD Architecture 2016:
    • Navigate to this folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ARCHDESK\2016\{5783F2D7-F004-0409-2102- 0060B0CE6BBA}\7.8.44.0\MC3
    • Replace the WHITELIST.XML file with the one attached to this post.

We're still working on correcting the XML file for ACA, as we did with MEP, so that you can just delete the whitelist file and reboot your machine to correct the issue.

We had the same error on 3 wiindows 7 computers.  Problem returned upon restarting, even after using the fix of deleting the whitelist.xml file.  We now have disabled "desktop analytics" and have had no further crashes.

when I go the the suggested link, there is no whitelist.xml file attached. I cannot find the file to download into the directory. I can find the directory on my machine. I too did not have a whitelist xml file there in the first place, but my partner did.

Hi @mikeshick@Wisenbaker_Architects, @Anonymous, @wkohn,

Please try the steps below to resolve the errors. We have done some work to remove the damaged XML files for both AutoCAD Architecture 2016 and AutoCAD MEP 2016, and we've confirmed the following fixes the issue for multiple customers, as well as several internal testing machines:

The XML file is in a different location for each program, and the build version folder (the last one before MC3) will differ if you have the service pack installed or not.

To resolve the error:

    • Exit all Autodesk programs.

    • For AutoCAD Architecture 2016:

    • Navigate to this folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ARCHDESK\2016\{5783F2D7-F004-0409-2102- 0060B0CE6BBA}\7.8.44.0\MC3
    • Delete the file WHITELIST.XML.
    • Reboot the machine.
    • Launch AutoCAD Architecture 2016.
    • Enable Desktop Analytics, if you previously disabled it.
    • The program will download a corrected WHITELIST.XML file.

    • For AutoCAD MEP 2016:
    • Navigate to this folder: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\BLDSYS\2016\{5783F2D7-F006-0409-2102-0060B0CE6BBA}\7.8.106.0\MC3
    • Delete the file WHITELIST.XML.
    • Reboot the machine.
    • Launch AutoCAD MEP.
    • Enable Desktop Analytics, if you previously disabled it.
    • The program will download a corrected WHITELIST.XML file.

This has also been updated in the public AKN solution (it may take a little while to refresh). Additionally, any customer who sends in an error report after experiencing this crash should now receive a link to the public solution.

I tried and the solution did not work. I've disabled analytics and can work now, after several hours of trouble. Thank you,

    Are those folder locations correct?

I do not have AutoCAD MEP 2016 installed on this computer, just AutoCAD Architecture.

My C:\Users\David\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ARCHDESK\2016\{5783F2D7-F004-0409-2102-0060B0CE6BBA}\7.8.44.0\MC3 folder does not have a WHITELIST.XML file in it.  Turning off Desktop Analytics and the CIP did stop the crashing.  Then I noticed that the "version" folder for AMEP was different from the one listed for ACA, and that I had that same folder (7.8.106.0) under ARCHDESK.  That folder did have a whitelist.xml file.  I am about to delete that file and then reboot, to see if I can then turn Deskotp Analytics and CIP again, without crashing.

I deleted the WHITELIST.XML file in C:\Users\David\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\ARCHDESK\2016\{5783F2D7-F004-0409-2102-0060B0CE6BBA}\7.8.106.0\MC3, rebooted the computer, restarted AutoCAD Architecture 2016, turned CIP and Desktop Analytics back on, and have been able to work in ACA 2016 for some time without a crash.  A new version of WHITELIST.XML has been downloaded to that folder; I assume that file does not have whatever corruption was in the previous version.

I do have SP1 for AutoCAD Architecture 2016 installed, and the "About" screen indicates my product version is 7.8.106.0.  Perhaps the 7.88.4.0 folder would be correct for someone where the "About" screen indicated that was the current product version.
