Turned off layers

I am working on plans for a renovation.  In the base Construct drawing certain walls and doors are on Demo layers.  New walls and doors are on New layers.  Some of the walls overlap.  When New walls overlap Demo walls it affects them, even when the Demo layer is turned off.  Turned off walls and ceilings show as a shadow on elevations.  Also doesn't work to fill in door openings when the door is Demo and a section of New wall is placed.

I have had very mixed success with Renovation settings and would rather not use that feature in this project.

Turning off (or freezing) the layer of Demolition Walls will not stop them from cleaning up with Existing or New Walls if they have the same Wall Cleanup Group.  I would recommend having a minimum of three separate Wall Cleanup Groups:  one each for Demolition, Existing and New.

I have not experimented with shadows on elevations, so I cannot speak to whether Demolition Walls would cast shadows, even if they are not displayed.  If you really are only turning the Demolition Wall layer to "Off", try Freezing the layer instead and see if that makes a difference.  If it does not help, you may need to separate your Demolition Walls into a separate file and only externally reference that file into your demolition plan files.

For additions projects I don't use that tool and simply draw demo items on a demo layer in 2d.  It simplifies things (like cleanup) and I don't need to see demo'd items in 3d.  Any appearance in sections elevations I will add dashed lines for manually if necessary.
Really does simplify things alot.  Sometimes trying to BIM everything makes things more complicated than necessary.
Some show a 3d before and after but I think wasting time on showing a before when it exists is not necessary. Use a photo!

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for posting your question here. In addition to what @David_W_Koch and @ntellery have recommended, here is a succinct explanation of best practices that we recommend for setting up demolition and revision drawings in AutoCAD Architecture when you're using Renovation Mode. The article also links out to certain topics within the feature, if you're looking for more in depth information.
