Mysterious object moves

When I select a single line to move it,  anything that is attached such as another line moves with the one line that has been selected. 

The only way I can get around this is to copy the original line to a new location, then delete the first line.  When the original line has been picked for deletion there is no problem.  There must be some system variable that i have inadvertantly changed... but I have no idea what.  Can anybody help?

Sounds like you've got constraints on the drawing.  If "Infer constraints" is turned on these will be created automatically.  Try the CONSTRAINTSETTINGS command for available settings, and DELCONSTRAINT command to remove them.
