Materials not appearing on wall object on Architecture 2020

When I open the materials browser and drag a material to a wall object or slab, the material does not show up in realistic visual style. Right-click and 'select objects applied to' highlights the object but a material is not visible.

If I create a 3D object (like a 'box') and apply a material, the material is visible.

Looking through many posts on the forum I have not found a solution that applies.  I have Architecture 2009 loaded on the same computer, and adding materials to wall and slab objects works on that program.

I do not have access to the 2009 release to be able to test whether that version behaved differently, but, in general, AutoCAD Architecture objects behave differently than AutoCAD solids, particularly objects with components, like Walls and Slabs.

AutoCAD Architecture objects make use of Material Definitions, which are then assigned to object components in the object style or definition.  Part of Material Definitions is a render material, which will display when certain visual styles are current, like Realistic.
