Is Merge Common Materials Reliable?

Is the merge common materials considered reliable?  I'm working with ACA 2015.  I was generating 2D elevations from a composite xref'ed model and getting weird results, such as disappearing walls.  Interestingly, if I refreshed the 2D section / elevation item, the linework results would change - walls would appear and disappear.  This was without adding or changing any content.

Anyways, I came across an old post saying materials merging is not reliable.  (I remember this was the case with ACA 2007).  So, I turned off this feature and my elevations now come in correctly (no transparent walls) and in addition, the component design rule I had defined now works (footings to hidden line).

Is it best to avoid materials merge?

Thanks,

Jim

I think I know what is it.

IT'S A BUG of the poor old "2D Section\Elevation" object... For VERY, VERY complex model...

: ((

If it is so, you can try to:

 - SHORTEN your Section Line and then copy it (and then construct your "2D Section\Elevation" object from two of them, for example)

or

 - SHORTEN the depth of the Section\Elevation.

If your bugs then disappears - it was the bug!..

On 2015 its not that bad, you need to have your floor at exactly the same location, i mean wall over wall, not even 1/32" of a difference, to not have problem. On 2016 its not reliable at all, they are supposed to be working on a fix.

Thanks.  I had it working before and was pretty stoked.  Then, it stopped working.  Maybe I "nudged" the xrefs.  I'll go back and check.

Why oh why is this still occurring in 2015?  I had this issue in 2007.  Is this rocket science, Autocad?  Are you listening?  🙂

My dear jkedmondson!

You aren't right!

It wasn't the Solution.

It was only a version of how (and why) it may be!.. ; ))
