It's always best to start with the correct template.

Imperial for inches and feet

Metric for millimeters (or whatever metric unit you need to use)

If you have a metric drawing that used millimeters, copy and past into an imperial (inches and feet template)

and scale the geometry up x 25.4

  1. On the Dimension menu, click Style
  2. In the Dimension Style Manager, click New
  3. In the New Dimension Style dialog box, select a Name, Start With Style, and select Use For: All Dimensions. Click Continue
  4. On the Primary Units tab, enter inches in the Suffix box and set the Scale Factor to 25.4 (as there are 25.4 mm per inch)
  5. Click OK, and then click Close
  6. In the drawing, select the dimensions that you want to be displayed in inches
  7. Right-click and click Properties on the shortcut menu
  8. Expand the Misc category
  9. Select Dim Style, and then click the list of dimension styles and select the dimension style that you just created
  10. The selected dimensions are now displayed in inches

You can cross check MM to Inches and MM to Feet here.
