Are you trying to add tool bars and dock them to the side of the AutoCAD window, or are you trying to add one or more palettes, such as the Tool palettes, and dock it/them to the side?

If you are trying to add tool bars, you will need to turn on at least one tool bar in your current Workspace, and then you can right click on that and choose from all of the available tool bars.  (You can turn on more than one in the initial effort, if you like.)  To do this:

Select the Workspace Switching tool at the right side of the Status Bar at the bottom of the AutoCAD window.  A menu will pop-up.  At the top of the menu (above the horizontal line that is above the Save Current As menu option) will be a listing of your currently available Workspaces; the current Workspace will have a checkmark at the left side.  Verify that is the Workspace to which you want to add tool bars.  If not, select a different one to set it current.2017-07-04_WorkspaceSwitching_SetWorkspace.png

  • If you set a different Workspace current, select the Workspace Switching tool again.  (If not, you already have the menu deployed, and can continue.)
  • Select the Customize menu option.2017-07-04_WorkspaceSwitching_Customize.png

  • In the Customize User Interface [CUI] dialog, make certain that the Customize tab is selected, and that the dialog is fully expanded.  If the icon on the button at the bottom right corner is a greater than sign [">"], select it to expand the dialog.  If it is a less than sign ["<"], the dialog is already expanded and you should not select it.
  • In the upper left pane, expand the ACAD node if it is not already expanded, and then expand the Workspaces node.  Select the current Workspace.2017-07-04_CustomizeUserInterface_SelectCurrentWorkspace.png

  • The upper right pane will show the Workspace Contents.  Select the Customize Workspace button.  The items in the upper right pane will turn blue.
  • In the upper left pane, expand the Toolbars node.  This will show you all of the tool bars that are defined in the ACAD.cuix file.  Find at least one that you want to see in your Workspace.  Select the box at the left side of that tool bar, to put a check mark in that box.  This will add that tool bar, under the Toolbars node in the Workspace Contents area at the upper right.2017-07-04_CustomizeUserInterface_AddToolBar.png

  • Add as many additional tool bars as you want.  If you have tool bars in any partial customization files that you may have loaded, you can scroll down in the upper left area and expand the Partial Customization Files node, and then expand the specific partial customization file node and the Toolbars node under that and place check marks on any tool bars you want.
  • When you are done adding tool bars (and have added at least one), in the upper right area, select the Done button.  The Workspace Contents items will go back to black type, and the check boxes will be removed in the upper left area.
  • Select the OK button to ratify the changes and return to the drawing canvas.

You should see the tool bar(s) you added.  They may be docked, or they may be floating.  You should be able to drag them by the double-line handle and drop them where you want.  When you are done arranging the tool bars, go back to the Workspace Switching tool on the Status Bar and choose the Save Current As menu option.  In the Save Workspace dialog, select the down arrow at the right end of the Name edit box, to see a list of all currently defined Workspaces.  Choose the name of the current Workspace, and then press the Save button to save your toolbar arrangement to that Workspace.
