AutoCAD itself doesn't have capability to export ifc file. on knowledge network I read AutoCAD Architecture can export.

but I m not sure the file should be created originally in AutoCAD architecture or anyfile created in autocad you can open in AutoCAD architecture and export to ifc.

has anyone done this before ?

AutoCAD Architecture can create everything AutoCAD can plus its vertical elements so I think if you open a vanilla AutoCAD file in Architecture you can export it to IFC.  It just will not have any intelligent data, only the geometry.

Vanilla AutoCAD is the term to distinguish AutoCAD and vertical variations such as AutoCAD Architecture, Civil3D, AutoCAD Structural, etc...

You can export any .dwg to IFC from AutoCAD Architecture (or MEP) but the resulting IFC file will only contain AEC Architectural/MEP objects (Walls, doors, windows, cable trays etc), Solids/Surfaces (3D AutoCAD with no properties) and will not have any 2D AutoCAD (lines, circles, arcs etc)

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm just checking in to see if you need more help with this. Did the explanation that @Anonymous provided help clarify the way exporting to IFC from AutoCAD Architecture works?

Hi Robin,

I found your post below very informative and useful for my current search.

I was wondering if these surfaces imported from dwg to IFC could be frozen like a layer in AutoCad?

My application would be output from a 3D soil contamination model: there will be surfaces (of volumes) representing iso-concentrations, say 3 different values or surfaces. I understand that only the outside surface would be visible, say the 1 mg/kg isoconcentration surface or limit of a soil contamination volume. Inside that are greater concentration surfaces, say 10 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg in the central part of the volume. Would it be possible to import the 3 surfaces and then freeze the ones we do not wish to see to reveal the surfaces inside for example?

Many thanks

Sean Carson
