Continuous line override

Anonymous

I'm working on a drawing file (not created by myself) and it doesn't matter what layer I draw a line on, the linetype is always set to "continuous" as an override. So now when I draw a line on a layer with a dashed line property, it is drawn as continuous and I have to manually change the property to "bylayer."

Is this a command that can be reset?

With no objects selected, open the Properties palette, if it is not already open.  On the Design tab, under the General category, change the Linetype property to ByLayer.  (The Properties palette will display the default settings for new objects when no object is selected.)

-OR-

At the command line, type CELTYPE and then press the Enter Key.  At the prompt, type BYLAYER and press the Enter key.

perfect, I used the celtype command as you suggested

all lines that are do not have a width are displayed as a continuous line even though some are dashed lines and centerlines, etc.

How do you make them display correctly?

I tried MLSTSCALE, PLSTSCALE, UNITS, LTSCALE.

It will depend on what you consider "correctly" and how your linetypes are defined.   You do not mention what combinations of settings you have tried or what the entity linetype scale is for the objects in your drawing.

Can you reply back via the web interface and attach an example file that is not working for you?

FWIW, this old blog article explains how my firm sets up the values of the system variables you mention.  That may or may not work for your workflow.

Emerson Facility has been using LTSCALE 24 for architectural drawings of the production layout drawings for many years. Most existing access space lines are according to the layer. I've checked the layer linetype, it is DASHED. Door swings and maintenance space uses lines with HIDDEN2 linetype assigned to the lines. None of them are displaying correctly. Whereas the Aisle layer has linetype AISLE assigned to the layer and do display correctly because they have a width of 2". I played around with it and found that if a width or thickness is assigned to the line then it displayed correctly. Otherwise all non-continuous lines are solid. When I highlighted them, then I could see the dashed line at scale.
I attached a drawing.

Your attached file did not come through.  The LTSCALE value of 24 suggests to me that your drawings are intended to be plotted at 1/4" = 1'-0" or 1/2" = 1'-0" and that you would want to keep PSLTSCALE and MSLTSCALE at 0.  If you only have one scale for an entire DWG file, that would work.

I am not certain why only lines with a width or thickness display the linetype.  It would be interesting to see if the same thing happens on a different computer.  If you replied via email, any attachments you make there will not come through.  If you reply through a web browser, you will be able to attach files.

I binded all Xrefs.

Thanks for explaining a better way to send a file.

It is attached to this message.

Yes, when a coworker opened the file it did display correctly on his computer. That's what told me it must have to do with a setting.

Recently, I opened a file from another company that was a different unit: centimeters.  I changed the file unit setting to meters, redrew the equipment, changed back to Feet/inches, then moved to my drawing.  I wonder if that messed up my settings so they don't display correctly.

Here is a screen shot of the file.  Notice, the yellow aisle lines are correct. But the grey lines attached to the red equipment are solid. They are supposed to be dashed lines.

MSLTSCALE is 0

PSLTSCALE is 0

LTSCALE is 24  (we plot 1/4" scale)

These are normal layers we use:

Were those linetypes already in your file, or did they come from the other file (that started out metric)?  If they are metric linetypes, based a unit definition other than inches, then they may not work with an LTSCALE value of 24.

If the DASHED linetype is one of the affected linetypes, try reloading it from ACAD.lin.  If you have imperial versions of the other linetypes, reload those as well.

They were existing lines that were functioning correctly last week.  They were made in imperial version file.  They suddenly changed.

Every file is displaying incorrectly now yet they plot correctly.  There is something wrong with the program. Do I need to uninstall it and reinstall?

That is strange.  If you are working in a version that allows for repair installs, I would try that first.  In Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > Uninstall or change a program, right-click on the version of AutoCAD Architecture you are using.  If Change is an option (or Uninstall/Change), choose that, then pick Repair Install in the dialog that should open.

A repair install is relatively fast.  It may or may not fix the issue, but it is usually worth the time to try it.

It needed an update.

But Emerson is now making everyone get an admin before installing or updating. Once I got an admin then the computer to make an update for the program. Then, once CAD was updated, it displayed lines correctly.

Thank you!
