GPS Annotation not visible in LT

Hello,

I've just started using Autocad 360 Pro for iPad in combination with a 3rd party GPS receiver. The system seems to work well apart from the following two problems...

1> Using "Current Location" to drop a marker and an annotation works really well in 360 but as soon as I open the file in LT for Mac, all the annotations are lost, leaving me with just a mass of crosses. For some reason, the text is being lost in between 360 and LT. I haven't been able to try it on a PC version as yet to see if the same issue arises.

2> The original GPS marker that you use to calibrate the DWG to GPS and use as a base point also disappears as soon as I open the file in LT for Mac. This means that I have to recalibrate the drawing evrytime I go back on to 360 to a known accurate point on the DWG. Combined with the issue of losing the text annotations it makes every mapping session quite frustrating and slower than it needs to be.

Any suggestions or solutions would be appreciated.

Cheers, Jim

Hi @mrjimgee,

As we've already discussed via email, the missing text issue has been forwarded to our developers for a further examination.

We'll contact you once well have more answers.

Thanks,

Do we have any update on when I'm likely to get a response? Considering cancelling Autocad 360 and LT subscriptions and moving to alternatives as not being able to annotate GPS markers is making the system pretty useless.

Look forward to hearing from someone very soon.

Thanks

I'm not part of the software or support team, just an end user like you: what 3rd party GPS software are you using? And do they actually support AUTOCAD LT as a software package?
As a long term Autodesk software user myself I don't see LT as being a valid software option for GPS centric needs like yours: that is best done in AutoCAD MAP and CIVIL and if not an option then at least full AutoCAD.

I wonder if you can test with the latter three software in Windows: except for AutoCAD for Mac the others are Windows based as is the majority of Autodesk's professional grade software offerings.

Consider posting your DWG file with your GPS info in the MAC forum for a more active and larger engaging audience and let's really drill down to the realities.
As you can see from their responses here so far, this team of software developers have no ability to address your question #1 or the bulk of #2.

Hi Dean,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm using a GNSS reciever unit through Autocad 360 on iPad. There is no third party software involved.  The GPS receiver just makes the iPads GPS location accurate down to 20cm.

Autocad 360 supports the ability to drop a geomarker within a DWG as a base point, and will then let you wonder around the map and drop GPS markers with annotations. I use Ordnance Survey DWG files and set my marker on known accurate points within that DWG. Then I walk the site and mark on the additional item locations (trees, temporary fence lines, road edges, ditches etc etc) by dropping a gps marker and adding an annotation to it.

It all works really quite well, and the accuracy is within the expected parameters. If I was only ever using Autocad 360 it wouldn't be a problem but as soon as the file is opened in LT, the markers are all visible but the annotations are not. So I just have a map covered in Xs. Nice if you're a pirate, rubbish if you're trying to work out which one is the gate post that needs removing!

Normal annotations work ok between the two pieces of software, it's just the notes associated with the markers that don't appear, which just makes me think the problem is on the 360 side rather than the LT side.

The support team here have looked at the files and they only see the markers with no annotations too. I'm guessing they would have viewed them on PC rather than Mac version but I'll double check to be sure. Either way though I don't want to invest in any other software or change to a PC as both pieces of software that I already own should be able to do what I'm asking them to do. It's just a bug that needs ironing out.

I'll pop over to the Mac forum and have a snoop around in there too!

Regards, Jim

Further to that, I've just tried on a PC version and still can't see the notes.

I'm unable to open in the A360 web viewer as the files are all larger than 10mb

AutoCAD360 is a wholly different software package written (and being written) from the ground up: AutoCAD/LT is a legacy software code that is evolving but it's roots are 30+ years old now. Apples and oranges comparisons of abilities, plus the fact they are on separate platforms altogether (hosted cloud and you are using an iPAD vs. PC based software).

Does your GNSS receive offer the ability to import those markers and annotations directiy into AutoCAD or LT for MAC?

I really think you are on the wrong website for help with the GNSS queries: you should be on with Trimble Support (in addition to the MAC forum). I suspect what you want needs to happen on a PC, not an iPAD, and the connectivity between the two may not really exist.

Hi,

Maybe not explaining myself very well. My entire set up works perfectly. The gnss system works fine with autocad 360. Everything is great and works as it should.

I can drop markers and make notes on the dwg through autocad 360 on iPad and it's perfect.

The problem is that as soon as I try and open that file on LT, the annotations have disappeared. The markers are there as they should be, just the words have gone.

I don't use Trimble, there is no 3rd party software issue. The only problem is that notes written in autocad 360, using a function within autocad 360 that is specifically designed to allow users to do what I'm trying to do, does not save properly to enable it to be viewed in LT.

I can re open a 360 file on my iPad and the markers and notes will be there. The second I download the file from a360 and try to open it with autocad, the markers are still there, but the text annotations are not.

I can't imagine the issue is linked to anything other than autocad 360 not saving the text entities in a way that autocad lt can read them. I'd be surprised if it's an LT issue. It seems like it's 360 not doing what it should. Some sort of bug in how the annotation option works.

As I said, normal text annotations work fine. It is specifically the annotations linked to the GPs location marker command that don't show.

The support group have looked at the issue and I've sent them the fIles. I'll also post in the LT forum as it may speed up the response as you suggested.

Cheers, jim

That's what I'm saying: your GNSS is most likely NOT designed for LT for MAC.

You need to find out from your GNSS software/hardware vendor: I assumed it was from Trimble but you'll have to identify that source yourself.

Good luck.

Hello,

Can you tell me if this bug has been looked at or solved yet?

4 months feels like long enough to fix the issue... ?

Thanks, Jim

Helloooo???

Is this being ignored? It feels like it shloud be something simple for you guys to solve but totally ruins GPS functionality if you dont...

Hello,

Do Autodesk still employ a support team? Is this just something is that is never going to get a response...?

Thanks, just not getting any responses.

I've been working on the problem myself and discovered that the annotations are actually showing up in all versions of Autocad and LT but they are, quite literally, hundreds of miles away from the markers they are meant to be linked to.

If you zoom to extents on a drawing that there have been used in, it zooms out so far that the original plan is a single pixel in size and the text annotations are somewhere off to the right of the screen, so small as to be pretty much impossible find.

You can find them by "select all" and then de-select the map. That just leaves you with a number of text items selected. I managed t make them visible by scaling them up (a lot) but obviosuly they are no longer linked to their original markers so the problem still persists.

It feels like this is something that should be quite fixable. The annotations just need fixing to the markers somehow???

I'll send direct message to see if that helps!

Guess this is just being ignored. Pretty much worse customer service I've ever come across.
