Importing STL file, shows detail until moved. Then completely smooth

My issue is that when I import a 3d relief it appears to be correct until I press close and touch any other command.  The images below are the difference of simply clicking on the screen.

Why does this simplify the relief after it shows to have the detail?

David,

    Your resolution is way too low, before bringing in that stl. start a new model and have the resolution up to the max then bring that stl in.

Thanks for the help.  It spurred some thought. Although My Resolution was at the highest setting.  I had my project size much smaller than the importing stl.   It was triming the stl significantly, so we were only seeing  a portion of the file.
