xpu feature

Do you know arnold is delevoping xpu (cpu+gpu same time) rendering feature? I know that renderman released xpu feature in version 24 and also houdini is developing xpu feature in its karma renderer. It is a massive timesaver when you use both cpu and gpu for rendering. For a renderer which gives same results with gpu and cpu this could be not a hard thing to add.

Hi, Without going into too much detail in regards to our roadmap, I will say that hybrid rendering certainly a feature that we are interested in adding.

Just an interesting note on implementing hybrid rendering, while it may seem trivial once you have rendering capability on both devices, the problem really does become much more complicated when you get into the details. Just balancing the work load between devices efficiently is a complex task in itself. Different hardware may be able to solve different problems with varying levels of efficiency, and distributing the work in an optimal way to actually achieve a net gain in performance can be tricky. Furthermore, there are tricky issues with when different hardware may produce minor different results in some situations. Lets say one device gives 5.00007 and the other 5.00008 in some calculation, just due to some differences in the result the hardware gave. For 99% of cases this is probably indistinguishable. However, if you subtract 5 from these values and multiply by 10,000 (maybe due to some shader / integration logic) you then have 7 and 8, which are very different. So these are problems we have to watch out for.

But yeah, its still something we want to do, but unfortunately its not just as simple as switching it on. Hope this insight proved useful to you :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

Thank you so much for answer and brief explanation of challenges. It was interesting to read the obstacles faced by the developer, while we were rendering our scenes as an artist. You all are great developers so I know that you will overcome any obstacle perfectly.

For me Arnold gives the best image between all renderers while being user friendly but It was little bit slow. No support for apple processors made me upset but after xpu feature there will be no reason to use any other renderer on windows machines. It's nice thing to hear that this feature is in your roadmap. Thank you so much again.

My pleasure! Glad I could help, and to hear you have positive experiences with arnold :leicht_lächelndes_Gesicht:

i don't think it would be a massive time saver, CPU only contributes ~10% of the render time, and on light scenes may slow down the whole rendering because the CPU will be busy handling the IO of the GPU. (most "users" have bad gamer rig machines)

in my experience having a CPU and GPU renderings for longer time is worth the trouble it makes the machine hotter and cooling a challenge to keep your machine under proper temperature conditions.
