First frame takes 4 to 10 hours to render, following frames 22 m.

Hi

I am trying to understand what is causing my scene to have inconstant render times.

When I render with the Arnold Render View the render times are always 22 minutes (approximately).

When I render with the batch render however, the render time starts regularly and then balloons to 4-10 hours after the first 5 minutes.

This happens only for the first frame of the sequence. Not frame 001, just the first frame of any batch render sequence (so even if I render fro frame 2 to 150, frame 002 will render slower).

The other frames seem to render at normal speed.

My scene is a close up of a body with a few arnold standins of xgen grooms, but other shots of the same model did not have this problem.

Here is the LOG for frame 01, at the very end you can see the render time exploding. Any suggestion?

I'm afraid that render that frame with CPU will take extra long.

Also I'm using the old arnold version because the newest release is very buggy. 😅 As other user have noticed, all the renders rom the lagest release come out distorted and corrupted. I had no choice but scaling back a version. If there is a way to work around the corrupted renders I'll be happy to install the newest version again 😀

Hopefully you don't need to render full resolution in order to repro this issue? If you render at 200x200 pixels do you still get a much slower render for the first frame than the following frames? If so, you can use that in your testing. If you disable adaptive sampling and use AA=1 does it also show this problem? If so, that's another thing you can do. Hopefully now you can do this testing in just a few minutes instead of hours or days...

 

And if this causes your slowdown to go away, then that's useful information as well.

I made the following experiments using the Arnold version I currently have.

 

  • render at 10% scale: This render faster and does not balloon on frame 1 (5 m per frame)
  • Disable adaptive sampling and use AA=1: This render faster and does not balloon on frame 1 (6 min per frame)
  • Ignore Textures: This does not render faster, actually it renders even slower (extimated 34626.1s for frame 1)
  • Ignore Shaders : This render faster and does not balloon on frame 1 (around 5 m per frame).

If you do a cpu time AOV, I wonder if it shows what is causing the expense? If lower res and lower AA are fine, then it could be a small fraction of a pixel that is super expensive?

 

Also, this 5m you report, is that "rendering" time or total time? You'd only want to pay attention to the rendering time since you have almost 5 minutes spent simply starting up the render.

I installed the latest arnold version now @Stephen.Blair  and tried a CPU render with the cputime AOV.

Camera AA:3, Diffuse 3, Specular 4, Transmission 2, SSS4, and Volume Indirect 1. These setting do not give as good as a result like the one produced by the GPU, but like this arnold rendered the first frame in 44 m.

However in Nuke I can not locate any AOV called cputime.

It just does not appear. There is a layer called OTHER that comes out yellow though, maybe is that one.

(Also BTW, the denoised beauty from OIDN came out corrupted).

If rendering at 10% scale is coming out black, then I think you have bigger issues with this scene that you need to solve. I would suggest simplifying your scene until you figure out what is the problem. I suspect that might also be the cause of your slowdown.

 

Did you look at the warnings in the log? nans and infs can cause all sorts of problems, including weird slowdowns. Try and fix your /Turnaround_CAM_01/Turnaround_CAM_01Shape. Or better yet, first try deleting that completely and see if it fixes your problem. If it does, then you can investigate how to fix that.

I will try this tonight sure @thiago.ize, I deleted the 2 cameras that seem to give nan issues accordingly to the log (not the shot camera luckily) and I am rendering again tonight!

In the meantime @Stephen.Blair, now that I installed the latest version I managed to render one regular frame with the better Log that you mentioned before. The frame come out correct, with no distortion this time around :), but again it took hours. Maybe this new log file can give a better insight! What do you think?

Unfortunately I don't see anything obviously wrong in the log.
We just can't tell where the time is going.

It's a GPU render, so we don't get as much stats/profiling info. That was one of the reasons for suggesting a CPU render: if CPU render was also slow for the first frame in a sequence, then the stats/profiling might help pinpoint the problem.


In general, what I do with problem scenes is try to isolate the problem:

- export an ass file and use kick (this is not for everybody, but it helps because it is actually simpler than loading maya to render a maya scene)

- render at AA -3, no adaptive; reduce the resolution, maybe do a render region (as Thiago suggested)

- start removing stuff (operators, procedurals, geometry). As long as the problem still happens, I keep simplifying...

- check whether Ignoring things changes anything

- use an operator to apply the same shader to everything, or to disable things

Yesterday I removed the camera 001 from the file and the standins too, unfortunately it is not the problem 😕

I attached a log of the 1st frame (5 h 26 min render time) and the log of the following frame (18m 45 sec render time).

Does this help in any way?

The log does helpfully show that most things look the same between the two frames (ray counts, etc.) with the exception of the time. As we said earlier, I think you need to simplify your scene to try to figure out what is causing this. The fact that you can't render at 10% resolution without getting black is particularly concerning.
