or is it the specular setting?

Yes, that looks like specular to me. Try increasing the specular_roughness to see if it disappears.

OK thanks Lee - I will test that, and while on this subject
workflow suggestion would be to expose the shaders in a StandIn- since right now I'm jumping back to an alt scene used to layout the OG stand in - then back into the main file with lights ect to test-- it isn't a great round trip ... unless this is possible now- which I could find no example of in the documentation
