Clamp the curvature node

Hi,

How do you clamp the curvature node?

I've tried connecting a RampRGB or a Range for example, but the result is always a gradient.

I'm looking for a clean contour, like you get with "none" interpolation in a ramp.

Some rectangular parallelepipeds also appear in the rendering.

What are they?

what is the solution to this problem?

How many curvature samples are you using?

I've tried 4, 8, 16, 32, but then, that takes too long to render.

What do you think about it?

What times and results are you getting and are you using GPU with the latest plugin build?

Also, why are you doing this? Maybe there is an alternative solution, like ambient_occlusion or the utility shader.

Hi Lee,

I working on Maya 2024.2 with Arnold 5.3.5.2

Like in this example with the boat, I'm trying to create waves with a cartoon rendering.

exemple_01.PNG

I created a polygon disc with a texture deformer, which contains an ocean deformer.

I thought the Curvature node would be a good idea to get the white caps on the waves.

In order to get a clean outline, I thought about clamping it with a ramp node.

But the result looks more like a spray from/like the curvature node and not as a clean shape.

With a resolution of 4526*1682 and a sample size of 32, my render time was 22 minutes.

With a sample size of 64, the render time increases to 1h37.

My colleague using Redshift gets a render in less than 15 seconds with low samples and without any artefacts.

Have I connected nodes in the wrong way?
Could it be a problem with the scale of the scene? Workings Units is centimeter
