Writing ASS for crowd

Hi,

I'm trying to find a workflow for crowd rendering with Arnold/Houdini
(I'm using Arnold HtoA 6.1.4.3 (arnold 7.1.4.3) on Houdini 19.5.493)

But it gives me headacke !

The agent system of houdini is a special packed primitives.
When I run a simulation and try to save the caches to .ass file, all the meshes of ALL the agents are writting inside the .ass file.

Is there a way or any tricks to keep instances with a crowd setup into an arnold procedural ?

I need to render very massive crowds with HD agents, and that's impossible if it's unpacked geometry. Houdini crashes due to ram issue.

Thanks for help, I can't find solved topic about that !

I am also having the same problem.
Have you found a solution here since then?

Yes, I ran into usd / solaris.

The cache files go from 30go per frame to 800Mo. But it was a pretty massive workflow, lot of RND and dev to create all proper render settings, aovs, etc.

I spent month on it.

But you can stay in /obj/ and try splitting your crowd into different parts, use LODs and camera frustrum, try to use same models with different textures.

Good luck  😉

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I see that you use usd/solaris.
Just knowing that ASS can't do that is a step in the right direction.

As for usd/solaris,
I'll take this as an opportunity to try it.
I will take this opportunity to try it.

Thank you very much.
