Arnold keeps crashing with error message "Bad Modules Crash"

Hello, I'm encountering an error when rendering to disk with Arnold.

I'd launch the render and for a while it'd be rendering properly, and a few frames into it, it'll error with this message:

Bad Modules Crash

SymInitialize returned error: 87

I've created a simplified scene that reproduces this error reliably on my machine.

Can someone offer an explanation on what might have gone wrong?  Maybe I clicked on something I shouldn't have?

Attaching some screen shots.

CPU: Threadripper 3970X

GPU: RTX 3090

I reached a limit on attachments on my original post, so attaching the simplified hip file here.

Also attaching a GIF of the error happening.

It doesn't produce the error on any specific frame, it appears randomly.

Funny, we're getting an Error 87 in Houdini (while using HtoA) on a Threadripper PC as well. Submitted the issue to SideFX first. Also running a memory test on the PC.

Hi everyone,

We've also getting the same error.
Error in this log file (285): stderr: syminitialize returned error: 87

Has anyone heard back from either SideFX or Arnold regarding this error?
Or has any ideas as to the cause?

all the best,

amwilkins

I was able to reproduce this when I rendered with GPU. Not CPU.
When I use GPU, the hick process isn't ended when the frame is finished, so I render 17 frames I have 17 hick processes still running, and I think that's what causes the crash.

Our artists also complain on these crash-errors. Even when not rendering. The common thing is Threadripper PCs.

Another recently reported issue is that some OSL (with errors in the code) can cause this.

Do you have a way to repro the crash-error?

Who is "our"? Aristocrat Leisure Ltd ?

No repro case yet, unfortunately. Still trying to figure out the conditions. Our team is Plarium.

In Houdini, getting this 87 error when simply trying to RENAME nodes and or copy paste nodes!?!?

unfortunately we came across this error too, no gpu rendering. Several different scenes has this problem where this error randomly happens when user renders scene. I can provide one repro scene which fails every time when you try to render it. I've tried it with vanilla Houdini only with Arnold plug.

I meet the same error....

maybe I think I've solved it. (at least in my case)

I also had the same problems with only render gpu (RTX 4090) with random stop in rendering

disabling in the USD ROP RENDER the default snapshot interval (set to 300 of default)

I was able to finish test sequences that were previously skipping and crashing.

random solution to a random problem 😁

Hello,
We met the same error 87, since we updated Houdini to 19.5

Someone has found an explanation or a solution ?

Message 15 of 26

Error 87 means only that a crash happened. It's not specific to any one thing. The crash could be anything.

Do have a scene that reproduces the crash? Ideally as simple a scene as possible.

happens on copy pasting, renaming nodes, saving through SG....simple stuff!
all googling points to Arnold, even though were not even rendering anything?!

Houdini 20.0.590 and Arnold update appears to have helped, however I'm unfortunately still now get a "Fatal Error" every 10mins IPR rendering with Arnold compared to Karma even on very simple test assets.

In HtoA 6.2.5.1 there was this in the comments:

  • HTOA-2446 - Avoid "SymInitialize returned error: 87" pop-up messages for crashes on Windows

The release note wording is unclear. Was the crash reason fixed, or does it still occur without a popup?

You won't see the pop-up "SymInitialize returned error: 87" when there is a crash. That's all. if there's a crash, it will still crash, you just won't see that error 87 message.

Before this fix, any crash for almost any reason would also trigger the pop up message.

With any scene, no matter how simple? I haven't seen that myself.

The error 87 popup happened with any type of crash and really had nothing to do with why the scene crashed. The crash could be caused by any number of reasons.
