Z Depth jagged/sawtooth Edge Issues

Hi,

I'm having some issues with Z-Depth and After Effects compositing.

Image is 32bit, using Frischluft Depth of Field plugin, and EXtractoR. I know the Z-Pass is not antialiased by design.

My problem is strange edging issues when applying the Depth of field. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Again, using After Effects for compositing. The Z-Pass is precomposed in its own layer.

Thanks!

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately, that does not fix the issue. Still getting the edging problems. Even with a simple setup. See below.

DId you change the filter? By default the Z AOV uses the closest filter, if you set it to gaussian it will apply anti-aliasing

Hi Stephen,

Yeah, I tried the Gaussian filter at different widths (2,1,.05). It produces a different issue. This is 0.5 filter width. Filter widths of 2 and 1 are worse.

Its better to get Zdepth rendered without Anti Aliasing especially if u are using Nuke for compositing, it will give better result preventing bloom and artifact on edges, but if u need it w AA just change the filter from closest to Gaussian.

Hi Hassan,

Yes, I agree with the Aliased Z-Depth vs AA'd Z-Depth. However, I've tried both ways and they BOTH produce issues. It's almost as if the Z-Depth pass is 1-2 pixels too wide. I use a Minimax in After effects to shrink the pixels, but this cuts too far into the Z pass.

I did try rendering at 4K and this seemed to drastically reduce the issue. But rendering at 4K is not practical for me. I need these frames render at 1080p without this issue.

I've also tried Maya and Arnold...same result.

If anyone has any other suggestions, they would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

Why does this issue exist from 2015 to now and still NOT even be fixed ? There is no different from closest vs gaussian filter on Zdepth AOVS !!!!!! It's still very very jagged. Please fix !!!!
