In x-particles you can assign an ExplosiaFX tag on the emitter and in combination with an xpExplosia dynamics object let the particles behave like e.g. fire.
Is it possible to assign a volume shader to the emitter and render the particles directly as fire and skip the OpenVDB process?
Or is the only workaround indeed cache the animation and saving it as vdb.

Rendering explosia volumes directly is not supported currently, only via VDBs.
