Error with new Substance Engine

Hi everyone,

I wanted to try out the new Substance Engine from C4D 2024.2 and loaded a Substance in the node editor. But the preview image is black and when I connect the materials to my Arnold material, it isn't affected. Thinking it was a problem with C4D I checked the console and found an error message from c4dtoa: "ERROR node "substance" is not installed".

Does anybody know where this is coming from or how I could fix this? Using Substances with Arnold worked like a charm in 2024.1. Is the new Substance Engine only for Redshift? What is going on?

Thanks so much in advance for any pointers or help!

Best regards

The 'Substance 3D Material' nodes is not supported by Arnold. You still have to use the old method: create a 'Substance Shader' node, load a Substance asset (Extensions > Substance Engine > Load Substance...), drag & drop it to the Asset field from the Substance Asset Manager and select a channel.

Thanks for the response! Will it possibly be supported in the future or is it a node that Maxon locked to Redshift?

The Cinema 4D SDK only offers support for the old workflow. If we want to switch to the new workflow, we have to implement a similar shader in Arnold using the Substance API directly. It might be supported in a future release, but I can not tell for sure.
