The setting I'm looking for is similar to the "Radius" parameter found in c4dtoa spotlights. The radius parameter softens up shadow edges very well but physical_sky doesn't seem to have a similar function?
Attached (low sampled) image shows physical_sky in scene with hard edged shadow on primary object.
