I can find the toon map, which in 3ds max can not be applied to an object, it looks very detailed. How are we suposed to asign this as a material? the help files have two "tutorials" that have no interface guides in them, I can not find the so called "toon shader" at all just this toon surface map.

Here's how you use the so-called toon shader

oh wow thanks for the fast reply, would you be willing to open the toon map in the slate workspace so I can tell where all those ramps are connected? I did try doing map to material and the default settings just render a grey ball that doesn't look cell shaded at all. Im sure I am just being dense in not seeing how this all works

Information about Map to Material can be found here.

The Toon documentation is here.

So apparently the issue here is that you need to change a setting in the render settings Arnold Renderer->Filtering -> Sample (Pixel) Filter -> Type to Contour. To see any lines which would denote a toon rendering.

Without that filter turned on and the mech tutorials suggesting that you use a skydome light, the results are a none toon rendered rendering.

Thanks for the help guys. hopefully we will get better tutorials or somehting soon cause the current tutorials are not very usefull.

It's mentioned in that tutorial and several times in the Toon documentation page.

Hi there,

I'm just trying to work out why the sphere in the learning scene provided with the toon material applied previews completely black in the viewport? Is this just specific to my machine or do others have the same problem?

Many thanks

@Nano Langeheim you probably have to add some light in the scene. to see the texture.
