Hi everybody,

my name is Rainer Carstens. I am new to this Forum, but not new when it comes to Autocad.

My first version of Autocad was 2.6 in the late 80´s, when it took a minute to refresh a complex drawing 😴 and have followed the different versions until to day. Not allways with great pleasure, but it is with Autocad like a long term marriage: There will always be things that annoy you, but you love her regardless. Now, almost for 40 years.

I am a retired engineer specializing in mechatronics with a lot of different skills. The last 10 years, I have also worked as a volunteer mentor for various study groups at universities and higher technical colleges.

After retiring, Autodesk has been kind enough to let me use a student license so I can continue my work of passing on my experience to the next generation of engineers. I am very greatfull for that. I am very grateful for this. It gives my life meaning and joy, and at the same time, I think, it keeps my brain going.

Thank You !

Hi @Rainer_C_ - assuming you used to do hand drafting? My father was an piping engineer for oil companies and I recall desperately wanting to draw with his special pencils on his big drafting table. 🙂  By the end of his career he had moved all the way up to AutoCAD R18, I was so proud of him.

Glad to hear you're drafting and creating, as well as mentoring. If you're ever interested in starting a User Group, reach out to me! I run the User Group program at Autodesk and it sounds like you would be a natural fit.

Have a great one!

Amanda

Hi all, and thank you for warm welcome.

Yes - even getting 69 this month, I´m still up for a challenge and love to work with my students.

Young people are often impatient and throw themselves headlong into new softwarepackages, becoming frustrated that things don't always work out as they expect.

I am trying to teach them starting with the basics, like working with userinterface settings and standard sheets, working with libraries etc. Befor actually starting contructing and drafting. And I think it is a good idea to have an old guy like me to keep them on the ground - at least i´m telling myself.

Looking forward to participate in the community, learning new people to know, and who knows, maybe a few new trics.

Best Regards

Rainer C.

Hi Amanda,
thank You for your kind mail.
I can almost see your father before me. I think, like me, he was standing at his drawing desk with large angeld ruler attatched to it. I still got my old pens and glassfiber eraser in a box, somewhere at the attic. It was a more stressless time, working in the old “blueprint” ages.
Time has changed, and todays engineers has to work more interdisciplinary, as i.e. my mechatronics students do.
Mechanical drafting and modelling, electrical construction, PLC programming and a lot of other things, demands a wide range of skills and documentation, and would almost be impossible to do the old way.

To continue to help them, i´m just now learning to work with Autocad-Electrical, creating my own schematic and panel libraries and working with the basics. It´s not that intuitive as I hoped for, but i´m steady getting there.

The community is a great help.

Thank´s again

Rainer
