Where is import Image Plane on 2024

Hello,

In our team's workflow we do use image plane (not canvas) to set the sketch as backplate and place the camera to match the sketch.

I'm not able to find this option anymore, has it been removed?

Yes, it has been removed.

You can find this info in the "Deprecated, replaced, and removed features" in the "What's New in Alias 2024" doc.

Thanks,  document says it has been replaced to Canvas which is not the same thing.

I find this a huge mistake by Autodesk... it was actually widely used by my team to re-import photoshopped perspective screenshots or renderings  from designers.

Being able to use an image as backplate while retaining camera control is must have.

Now how do i create a camera view that match the same perspective as design input, and use it as underlay?

This is a big step-back.

You're right: canvas and image planes were not the same thing (otherwise, why to have both?).

At the same time, please note that "image planes" are marked as "removed" and (I'm copying/pasting) "Removed indicates that the feature or component has been removed without equivalent functionality."

I can only say that I realized Autodesk removed from Alias almost every features that were tipically designed for video production needs (and still there with no updates from the time of the old Power Animator software). Of course, occasionally some tools designed for video production were useful also for design needs, as in your scenario.

Hi Paolo,

You can still use an image as a backplate by adding a backdrop to your environment.  Turn on 'Show Background' in Hardware shade to see the image.  If you turn off 'All geometry' you can orient the model in wireframe mode.

Do you think this workflow can address your needs?

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hello.
I can't find any backdrop settings. Now the picture is stretched to fit the window size, which means that its aspect ratio is arbitrary, but I need the picture to be with the original 1:1 ratio.
How to make the picture not distorted?

I agree, this is absolutely useless. Image Planes have gone. Canvas images are absolutely no good when trying to set up a view to a previous image for substitution of a new design into an older render (that has been done in photoshop or equivalent, not VRED or a 3D software with fixed cameras!).

Who makes these terrible decisions, and now as a modeler, when I have agreed to be able to do something to a tight deadline (with trusted 30 years Alias experience) I now look like a fool who can't use the software to my new client. TOTAL RUBBISH!!!

Absolutely right. What a stupid idea to remove this function.
