We are facing an issue while importing  .edf files into Alias 2020.3 on Windows 10 Operating system.

The error message what we get is incorrect file header.I have attached the image for this.

We are able to import same .edf in Alias 2018 on the same PC.Unfortunately i can not share the .edf files with you .

Please let us know if you have any work around for this.

Hi there,

I am sorry to hear you are facing issues with our EDF importer.

In addition to Bob's question:

Assuming you can reproduce the problem, and assuming you have tried that import more than once:

  • What makes you think that the problem is related to the EDF file size?
  • After which amount of time is that error dialog coming up? Is it always the same time spent?

Thanks

Thomas

Hello Thomas Rausch and bob 55,

1. what is the Edf file size?

-- The .edf file size i am trying to import in Alias surface 2020.3 is 98.0 MB.

2. What makes you think that the problem is related to the EDF file size?

-- When i get the edf file seperated to individual parts, sometimes it works (But not always).

3. After which amount of time is that error dialog coming up? Is it always the same time spent?

--It takes around 10 secs to get the error message pop up. yes always it takes opproximately same time. It does               not  hang the system during this process.

4.  To let you know , i am getting this edf files from ICEM surf .And as per my understanding, my friends who are                working in different companies are also having similar problem with the edf files.

Kindly suggest if you have any alternative way of opening this files.

Hi,

thanks for the additional info. Still, I am struggling a little to narrow down possible reasons for this misbehavior.

Is there a way you can repeat the import / open but this time switching on logging (e.g. by File > Open (with options) > EDF Options > Logfile Output), and provide me the log file?

Thanks

Thomas

Since everybody is working ffrom home now a days, this could related network timeouts.

Are you trying to open the file from a network drive through a VPN connection? If so please try to copy the file to a local drive first and then try to import the file into Alias.

Hope it helps.

It seems more like a Windows 10 issue, if you google for error 1073741819.

Excuse me, siddhardha.mjm, I might be wrong, as that number is related to the process ID and been used in cases where no more specific information about the real error cause is available.

I guess, I need to apologize to Pascal, as I was too quick in saying that this "-1073741819" would not give us any additional information.

In the meanwhile, I made some more experiments and it seems like that this "-1073741819" really indicates some issues related to the file system.

Where is that EDF file located - on a shared / remote drive? Have you tried to copy it to your local drive first? I am thinking into the direction of some sort of time-out happening during transferring data.

After some more investigations, I am pretty sure that the issue is related to the specific EDF file. It probably contains some unexpected or "corrupt" data which causes the EDF importer to freak. (The reason for my assumption is that I can force that -1073741819 to be reported on my end by feeding corrupt data to the importer.)

One way to add some evidence to this would be to import a different EDF file having approximately the same size as the original one. If that succeeds, I would count out the file's size as a possible cause.

However, if my assumptions are correct, I find myself in the unpleasant situation of being stuck at this point. Without the EDF data available, it will be a hard task to figure out the real cause of the importer fail.

Is there a way you could consider to share the file - maybe not via the forum but by sending it to me only?

Please check whether you have updated Alias 2019 to the latest patch level.. Alias 2019.4

There were some issues that were solved in 2019.3 and 2019.1

Hello Thomas Rausch,

I think the file is not corrupt because it opens with Alias surface 2019 version. But it does not open with Alias surface 2020.3

I tried to open other  .edf files of sizes 63MB, 56MB,3MB,33MB,49 MB,13MB . Among this i could open only the file of 3MB in Alias surface 2020.3

In my opinion edf importer is working fine with smaller files, but not with bigger files like complete car assembly.

Unfortunately i can not share this files with you because of data confidentiality.

Hello Rajeev Nair,

Currently i am facing this problem with .edf files in  Alias surface 2020.3  version. Are you suggesting to use Alias 2019.4 version.Could you please clarify?

Rajeev is right: we are improving all translators with every version of Alias, which includes EDF translators.

As there seems to be no way that you could share the data files, it might be an alternative for you to check more recent versions of Alias (like 2021.1) and see if the issue still occurs.

There have been some fixes and improvements to the EDF importer recently. One of which looks pretty similar to what you are reporting (ALS-9877: Edf import fails / Alias 2021.0).
