Can Profile tool build along a floating 'rail', like the rail tool?

Rail tool has an option for where to build: Sweep Pivot> On Curve, Off Curve & Closest.

Is there an equivalent setting in the Profile tool?  I'd like Profile tool to also drag a section along a curve floating off in space somewhere.

That option is not in Profile...Is there a reason you are not using the Rail tool, which does have that option?

I use the mono-rail tool as well.  But I prefer the Profile tool most of the time:

I like the in-window manipulator:

I also like chain select.

Mono-rail has a couple good things too, like being able to ask for continuity on the gen curve.  I don't think Profile can do that.
