Single part export for 3D objects with attributes

Single part export for 3D objects with attributes

Manufacturing has gone further and 3D tube cutting is now state of the art. However, Advance Steel doesn't have any solution to export and to process their single parts.

Right now you can only export a .sat, .dwg, . iges, open them in Inventor and convert them to .step. But then all the information is gone, no posNum or Material. So you need to manually add all the needed attributes to the every single part.

For example, a project with 200 m of handrail, you get 700 different parts. Now adding all the different attributes to the parts does take quit a long time. My job isn't sitting several days for adding attributes to single parts.

There is a tool called Export parts to ACIS in the Graitec PowerPack for Advance Steel

See Export to ACIS Laser Profiling and/or Export to ACIS - PowerPack for Advance Steel

The support team already suggested this. We tried it and it works, but it's more like a workaround.

The two biggest issues with this are, PowerPack is only available half a year after AS and the .sat datas aren't always fully working. When opened with Inventor/SolidWorks sometimes the geometry of the parts is wrong or there is something missing.

Plus, it's still a lot of work to export them, convert and controll and then import.  And not to forget, you need Inventor or SolidWorks.

In SolidWorks you install a PlugIn, after that it's only one button to click and everything is done. Especially not half a year after the release.

I have yet another job that includes heaps of laser cut tubes and the supplier is asking for IGES or STEP files. I could convert each part one at a time to maintain the part number in the file name but that is very long winded. I cold use the Graitec Powerpack but to be honest, I have had experience of the Powerpack and I am not keen to install it over my Advance Steel custom set-up.

Surely, it is time that Autodesk looked seriously at updating their export tools. On my wish list woul dbe the export of single parts to individual STEP/IGES/SAT files that retain the part number (at least) in the file name.

Just an aside ... I believe Tekla can already do this and my client is considering handing the entire project over to a Tekla draughtsman.
