scrubbing module for training

scrubbing module for training

Having a remote detailing trainee working in the AS model is too much liability. To be $ productive while learning, is to have a trainee first start scrubbing shop & part drawings to produce shop ready drawings and learn shop & detailing procedures that way via a steel checker reviewing their wk.

The AS construction model will always be developed and managed by a senior steel detailer (5 years+) with great plan reading skills. A trainee will most likely not start modeling a project from design drawings for years.

In short, I would like a remote scrubbing module where trainee(s) cannot access or be able to corrupt the AS master model, but be able to update the 2D drawings they are scrubbing from the master database, management tools and drawing  processes for that project.

Short questions: the AS master model should be some kind of write protected.

The 2D content should be created by the trainees, or should they have only access to the already created documents?

If the trainees update the 2D drawings it will be written back to the 3D model. The "original" 2D version should be "protected" and saved, right?

Do you want to "compare" the difference between the original 2D and what the trainees have done as well?

Gernot,

Using a new/remote trainee, the senior detailer/modeler would start developing all the 2D drawings (1st unscrubbed drawings) so the trainee would only be scrubbing already made 2d drawings. This would go for Erection plans as well. Eventually, the trainee can start creating 2D drawings, but much later down the road as this is a critical path and procedural training.

Example of fast tract project: I (the senior detailer) models the entire project with connections, (create formal RFI's during this process-very important), then senior model checker checks the project 100%. One of two things may happen after this, senior detailer/PM can do a preliminary list of all main materials so the fabricator/client can check his original take-off and maybe even price steel and lock it in. Or, if not so time critical, senior detailer assemble all 2D drawing with shipping marks in lieu of using preliminary marks. This (creating 1st basic assembly drawing unscrubbed) also proves to be a very good visual 2D checking process as well. So in short, trainees will not be creating the first 2d drawings.

Yes, the original 2D version being protected and saved is essential for liability. For example, if i use someone to scrub drawings and they drop the ball and do not perform, i can jump-in on originals and protect the project schedule... very important.

Yes, to "compare" 2D would be good. In the beginning, I would most likely redline the 1st original unscrubbed 2D as a training process. Then I would recheck/redline the the trainees 2nd updated 2D drawings, trainee will do a final back-check & scrub. Only then I'd give it my final check & sign-off/approval. Any 2D changes from future system updates/revisions/approval changes the senior detailer/modeler can fix and keep those changes in-house & under the master model.

Depending on the project complexity, scrubbing drawing can be 10%-40% of the project hours.

Hope this helps, and thank you for the good questions.

Bart
