whilst I understand that Advance steel was purchased and not developed in house but the single model per "project" is very limited. Advance Steel must operate more like P3D project (preferable integrated with the plant P3D project) with a project setup to control multiple models. All data is stored within the project database and can be accessed within the data manager or SQL data base. All drawings would operate similar to P3D othro allowing you to bring in any model you require and to store that drawing anywhere you require (not in a folder called details under another folder named after the model). The drawings should still have all the intelligence of advance steel drawings.
I understand the single model project works well for shop detailing but it is very short sighted and limited for engineering design especially in large engineering projects
