Model Roles in Joints

Model Roles in Joints

In most joints the model role of the components is hard coded into the joint macro. If I open the properties of the component seperately the Model Role field is greyed and we do not have access to change the Model Role. Consider the case of drawing styles when changing the model role might be advantagious for good drawing output - to isolate a particular object for example. It is not desirable to delete the joint box to access the Model Role. My suggestion is that the object Model Role can always override the default Model Role in a joint and that the Model Role field is always available in the individual object properties. Kind regards Nial Ball

Moreover there is no option to add User Attributes to Joint Boxes. That is also necessary

Thank you for sharing this idea with us. We will keep it in mind for any future improvement on model role editing in Advance Steel.

best regards

yes its a real pain I have model roles set up for profile parts which we have all our end plates etc profiled inevitably I end up having to export the material list to edit the plates to profile costing time and money

Furthermore it would be great to be able to set the default model roles (per joint type) for all joint created objects.

Years ago when we developed Advance Steel joints at CADS, we developed an app called JMDE (Joint Macro Defaults Editor) which all our UK joints used.

It essentially allowed the user to set default values for ALL properties of ALL joint created objects that were not part of the joint dialog itself.

e.g. materials, coatings, numbering prefixes etc

The values set by the JMDE app were then stored in Database tables and used by the joint macros.

These tables for the old joints (which still work and I still often use) can be seen in AstorRules.mdb.

e.g.

UK1_DFT_EndplateJoints

UK2_DFT_PurlinJoints

UK2_DFT_MetsecCRAccessories

etc

It would be great if this concept were introduced for ALL joints in Advance Steel as it offers absolute flexibility and was not hard to implement as we did it for every new joint macro as we went.  Admittedly it would take some time for you to go back over all your joint macros, but worth it.

The need for setting modeled objects to desired model roles is huge. This impact is felt most when generating drawings from modeled information. There are only so many things you can do with drawing style template information. Because I do not work for a shop detailer we have to set up all our own drawing style templates. It is a lot of work but that is fine. The difficulty comes when modeled objects are locked into a specific model role and you cannot change it so you can display existing separate from new construction. None of the model roles should be grayed out, whether it is a joint connection or a stair etc. Unless future Advance Steel role outs account for this issue by either getting ride of all the grayed out model role boxes or by adding a complete set of existing tools to create existing objects, this will be a problem for anyone who uses this program for construction applications where new and existing construction exist. The only semi useful fix I have found is to take and delete the connection box or the stair creation box, etc. for any exiting object once it has been completely created and set up. The only problem is there is no going back to update/fix any of these objects once these boxes have been deleted. They are now locked in and you better have them correct the first time or fixing them then becomes a huge hassle. Please release the model roles and stop graying them out. Thank you!

O.k.-now you have 27 votes-how many votes do you need to get this implemented?

Or we have to put this in the queue after all Revit improvements are done.

Why do you guys are so excited to improve Revit and disregard what paying Advance Steel users are asking for.

Is this already implemented? May I know how will we be notified about this one. by the way I just commented hoping this will notify me when it's done.

The slot plates at each end of the tube brace will be numbered differently as their model roles are not identical. Should we have any opportunity to modify the model role in the macro?
