Exploded Drawings

Exploded Drawings

Can you please change the way Advance Steel deals with exploded drawings.  At this point when a drawing is exploded the line work is scaled and in paper space and the dimlfac has to be set for each detail.  This is fine in the present however; in 3 years when a person has to edit the drawing they have to figure what is going on.  I have been taking the exploded line work into model space, scaling it back up to full size (1:1) then cutting a view port and zooming to the scale factor needed. Line work should never be scaled. We stopped drawing like that in ACAD-11 when PaperSpace & ModelSpace were introduced.

In the end drawings developed in Advance Steel need to be more user friendly for ACAD users.  3-10 years down the line someone is going to have to edit these drawing chances are they will not be using Advance Steel.

in general I'm with you. but why should someone change an old detail?

New projects should be new models--> new details.

Most of my work is in the gas & oil industry. At the end of a project (IFC) all drawings are uploaded to the clients data base. Everything that has ever been drawn for the oil field is in there.  None of the databases can handle models of any kind (Civil 3D, Plant 3D piping & electrical or Advance Steel ) All of the drawings have to be flattened and detached from the model.

Example project:  Design a new overland pipeline with valve access platforms along the way.  (In the Alaska oilfields all pipe lines are a min 6' above grade) The structural portion of the project would be to design the platforms, vertical support members and pipe supports.  We issue the project and all is well.  The drawing package is uploaded.  5 - 10 years down the road the client needs to add additional support members for a new piping configuration to one of the platforms or something minor. (under $1M)  The on site design team will check out the old drawings and modify them for the new project.  90% of the on site team only uses ACAD. (the other 10% uses plant 3D for electrical and piping) Or if it is a major project (over $1M) it will go out to bid.  A engineering company across town gets the contract.  The expectation is that they will check out drawings from the data base & modify existing drawings and only add new details or drawing sheets where needed.  In this instance scaled linework in paper space is a pain to figure out.  Can it be done?  Yes I've been dealing with it for years both with Pro Steel & now with Advance Steel produced drawings.

I my industry the only time a model is used is during initial design and development. After that it is editing existing drawings in 2D.
