Active groups

Hi,
the groups in the project explorer are very helpful, but it's many work to add parts to them. So it would be very great, to set a group to "active" (many think the lamp signalize this, but it doesn't).
so if the group is set to "active", all parts which are creating after this, should be automatic in the group.

additional to this idea:
- it would be good to have a default "while copy objects, use the move it to the same group"

- automatic set the group based on mainpart, so if I add a mainpart to the group, the attached part should be automatic be part of the group

- create extract according to this group

Hi,

you may create situations where parts of an assembly will belong to different groups.

I would not like that.

The automatic mainpart adding could be a default in the Management Tools or better in the group properties. This is not a must have, this could be an "Extra". Groups could be proof very easy, and if you use the lot/phase properties now, the attached parts automatic belong to this lot/phase of the mainpart for example by making a list (if you don't set the checkbox of for "based on mainparts")
So the option should be there but the customer should have the opportunity to choose it.

and according to this idea:

There should be a possibility to search for objects which are not set to a group.

If you create new objects and forget them to put them in a group it's not easy to find this parts. You could select a group and use the "switch reprMode off" command, but this is not useful if you have 40 groups. So a filter function would be nice, or the possibility to select more then one group to select the parts which are included (maybe with SHIFT like in windows)

Hi,

As this is an idea whose author seems to be a former ProSteel user (maybe I am mistaken),

I will just list the functionality of the ProSteel aqivalents to Advance Steel goups:

Prosteel has three types of classes that slightly vary in functionality: AreaClasses, Display Classes, FamilyClasses

You can define class members and allocate either single parts or all parts of assemblies to the members. A member of a class is similar to an Advance Steel group. For the members there are display function like, show, hide, show only, hide except.

Display classes are just what the name tells.

Area classes are used to create phases.

Family classes are used to create families of single parts and families of groups, that have the same detail styles.

I think it is a functionality that most of the former ProSteel are missing when they discover that Advance Steel groups are not aquivalent.

The big difference compared to Advance Steel is that a part can only be allocated to one member (= Advance Steel group) in one class.

Therefore the need for three classes, while As has on  class of groups. An this has to be taken into account when thinking of filter based functionality like hide, show ,etc.

I think the As groups can be pimped to have the same functionality. I do not know if it is really necessary. I would proposose to create a tree structure where the first level is equivalent to the  Prosteel classes, lets call elements of the first level class types, the second level would be groups inside of the class types. I would use the same restriction as Prosteel inside of the class types: A part can only be a member of one group.

So an Advance Steel user could create a unlimited amount of class types, with a distint allocation of a part (or all parts of an assembyl to one group).

But as I wrote:

I am not sure if that is really necessary.

And.

There care always other concecpts and ideas.
