Stair-Railings Problem

Hi all!

we're having problem modifying our stair (photo 1) that is subject for revision or little editing in the slope.

So here's the thing, we need to move the connection frame of the stair macro at the top nosing by lets say 1/2 (photo 2) which will change its inclination.

usually the attached handrail macro will just follow but for this case it disappears and leave the base plates behind (photo 3). I ask my officemate to do hers, the rail follows but it resets its: layer, numbering, main mark and main part, handrail connection but again leaves the base plate unharmed (photo 4). which we cannot let it happen because it will ruin our numbering and its a big project with lots of stairs and platforms (22 in exact: photo 5). Please help! 

(it only happens to certain stairs, the other stairs are doing fine with the modification.)

Thank you for posting on Advance Steel forum.

I have reproduced the behavior on my side too.

It seems to be an issue when place a Railing joint on a sloped UCS (and not in WCS): the joint gets completely recreated when change the original slope - hence the numbering reset, use of on the current layer.

After the first change and reset, the Railing elements keep their numbering and properties for the next slope changes.

I have documented and escalated this issue to the development team for further investigations.

For now, I could not find a workflow to prevent the first reset. I am sorry for that.

Not sure if you have already generated / issued the detail drawings.

If not, then I suppose the numbering itself could be "recovered", at least most of them.

Something like this: change the slope for one stair. So the 2 railings will lose the numbering. Then run the numbering right away --> the elements should get the same numbers, because they should use the available numbers just removed from the model. 

If you already generated the drawings, it is not easy at all: the original objects being deleted, the affected railing drawings will be moved in the category "Model object deleted" in Document Manager. So they will not be updated anymore, not usable anymore.

thank you for replying Emy! its a sad news for us but our team now is trying the closest way not to destroy the drawings because sad to say, it was already created. Hoping for the development team to see through this 🙂 I just dont understand why the other stair rails didnt change and just went well with the change in slope while others reset.

in the model there is a text for the classification of the stairs. You might find M03, M04 & M05 stair-rails does not reset when the connection frame of the stair is modified while the others do. This might help with the investigation.

I have a workaround where your drawings wont go to the "Model object deleted" section of the Document Manager. Before you do anything make sure you backup the model and associated folder.

1. In Management tools > Defaults > Use the filter and type Copy, then turn on the setting "Copy object part number"

2. Reload the settings into Advance Steel

3. Use Transform Elements to copy the stair and railings, this will give you a dummy copy with all the numbers in (double check this)

4. In your main stair, delete the railings then modify the stair to suit your requirements

5. Use the Joint Copy function to copy the railings from the dummy set onto the modified stair, this should copy the numbers (double check this)

6. Delete the dummy stairs and railings

7. Turn off the copy number setting in Management tools

8. Your document manager should now want to update the stairs & railings drawings without saying anything has been deleted
