Select an object, and then ALL of the objects BOLTED to it?

I frequently use the custom command (taken from the pinned custom commands thread!) that allows me to select an object, and then automatically select all parts of that particular assembly. It is very useful.

Is there a similar custom command (or sequence of commands) that would allow be to select an object or assembly, and then quickly select any objects that are bolted to it with site bolts?

For example I could select a column, use the existing custom command to select the entire assembly which would capture any welded on fin plates and the baseplate, and then use an additional command that would select any bracings bolted to the fin plates or beams that are connected directly to the column using site bolts.

Any tips greatly appreciated.

[EDIT]

To further clarify my post above, I don't want to use the 'Display connected objects (site & shop)' command as that will select the ENTIRE structure. I am more looking for a sort of 'intermediate' selection.

To elaborate on my example above, I would want the beams/bracings bolted directly to the column to be selected, but not the additional column(s) at the other end of those beams/bracings and so on and so on.

You u you use the "Display Connected Objects" with connecting elements selected, it will highlight/mark the individual pieces that those connecting elements are directly attached to.  So, using your example, I would follow this procedure:

  1. Select Column
  2. Use "Display Connected Objects in Shop" to highlight all attached pieces as well.
  3. Click "Select all marked objects"
  4. Click "Remove marking + display connection means"
  5. Click "Select all marked objects"
  6. Click "Display connected objects"

That should highlight the column as well as the individual parts that are connected to the column (including field bolts).

Thanks Jonathan, but sadly that's not quite what I was after. Reading my post again now, it seems I didn't quite explain properly what I want to achieve.

I am aware that I can use the "display connected objects (site & shop)" command from the AS Tool Palette, but that selects the ENITRE structure. I'm actually looking for a sort of 'intermediate' option where only the objects that are connected directly are marked/selected. So in my first example I would want the beams/bracings bolted to the column to be selected, but not the additional column(s) at the other end of those beams/bracings.

Thanks again for your reply though.

Please re-read my reply. That specific order of steps should get you exactly what you are looking for. It isn't about using a single button. Instead, there is a sequence of commands to get what you are looking for.

Jonathan, my apologies! You are absolutely correct, thank you!

I didn't read your first response carefully enough. Now marked as solved.

Thanks again.
