Plate surface marking

I am doing a job that has a lot of folded plates as well as folded beam components in it. Theses parts are stainless steel with a No4 finish on them, therefore a protective coating. I want to ensure that the flattened panels when laser cut are cut the correct way up and marked for folding correctly. This is not an issue on plain plates but is on polished and coated panels and even chequerplate panels.

Any suggestions please.

Thanks for the reply but that is not what I was after. Maybe I was not very clear on my question.

 

I have had an instance using chequer plate panels in the past where the program found 2 floor plates as identical but one was the correct way up and the other was upside down. For all intents and purposes the plates were identical, however in reality based on the material they weren't. I picked this up before sending the files fortunately.

 

In the attached screenshot the green panels are polished s.s. and are identical back to back (according to the numbering) but need to be identified as different panels to suit the polished face when folded.

Hi

 

I checked and did not find a side property (as gratings obviously have) for plates. I just made an entry in the idea station asking for that. Maybe you can vote there...

 

  1. I do not know if you can tweak graitings some how....
  2. Another option is to use a modification that is defining a side, like a weldmark. Maybe you can suprees that somehjow on the detail drawing. Doing that may cause, that the numbering process because of the position of such marks is now allocating different numbers to plates you think must be identical. But that is still less harming than using wrong sides in production.

Hi,

 

Further to Christian's response.

 

Checker Plate (or Durbar, Chequer or Bulb Plate or whatever name you want to use) is found in the Variable Grating object. EU, French And USA Checker Plates are all there under Grating Class.

 

One of the key differences with a grating object compared to a plate is that it has a top side property which can be swapped in the Positioning tab of Advance Properties.  AS recognises this and considers it when numbering. Hence for handed parts where the surface is the only difference this is a really good option. Parts that are otherwise identical will be seen as different.

 

It is not too difficult to add your own grating type to the system so you could add one for "Polished Stainless" or whatever. This FAQ tells you how to do that. Add a Grating FAQ

That is a good workaround for plane plates. I guess that the grating object allows all or allmost all modifications, except at least one:

You can not use it to create bend plates.....

Probably the geometry of the grid is used to detect the orientation in numbering. A plate that has two different sides will also have some kind of grid or hatch pattern to show which side is which.

you get a few ideas, which could be used.

Another idea could be to give these plates another properties which should be used as difference by the numbering.

You could use every property for this: for example the user properities, if you set the checkbox and input an information, the numbering will made a difference between the two plates because of this property:

Hi,

 

that is of course true. Anything that can be used as a criterion for numbering may get used. But my preference is to use something that I can see at the part (on screen) that is marking one of either sides.

Thanks for the comments guys and these are all things that can be done. It is good to learn something new every day. I was not aware that chequerplate was found under variable grating so that is good to know and will become another part of my workflow.

 

However, the biggest concern for me is the matter of folded beams and plates, these are not variable grates and so they will not get a side marked. There are lots of different instances where a surface needs to be marked and these items can be the same back to back, with bend lines and the like. This project I am working on has over 200 folded beams in it so I will do what I always do and add an individual comment to each of them and manually entering the coated side to each drawing and hope the laser cutter picks it up. I was just hoping there was an easier way.

Thought I would revisit this thread after a near expensive mishap that occurred today. I had sent about 16 tonnes of chequerplates to customer for cutting, most were odd shapes and all were modeled in the same plane, some were folded plates so I was not able to use the variable grating for chequerplates which shows a top side, so I went with regular plates. I created drawings and all were correct and matched the clients design. However, the DXF files created were in the majority of cases upside down. Now on a normal plate that doesn't matter and I have done 10's of thousands of plates, but with chequerplates this is a big problem, (see attached screenshot)

As you can see the DXF was created from the underside, and this was repeated on many other plates, I wasn't concerned about rectangular plates but only the irregular ones.

 

Fortunately the machine operator picked it up before running and stopped the process, once informed I manually mirrored all the problem DXF files and sent back and all is well.

 

Like most people we don't double check our DXF files we assume they are correct and they are. This is a warning to anyone who uses any coated material, stainless steel polished sheets, Alpolic or composite sheets or chequerplate, or even painted and unpainted surfaces that you don't want the numbering to view as identical that requires folding or not to be very careful.

 

I have updated the Ideas station https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/advance-steel-ideas/additional-surface-side-property-of-plates-needed...  (thanks Christian Blei) and the addition of a switch to set the top of a plate would be very, very handy.

Hi Gary,

 

A question: Did you mark the plates with a weld mark on the top side? Or how did you mark them? And (I guess you know that, I would need to check): Are the weld marks (or blind holes) in the dxf file shown with continous line (seen from top) or  hidden line (if seen from the bottom). Is there a rule how the folded plates get represented? Maybe there is the chance to create a small tool that allows to check the orientation in the dxf files automatically....

The holes are to hang the pieces for galvanising so not that important to the orientation. These are just floor plates to go into tunnel linings for a metro project so all are odd shapes. I should have done these as gratings and I am kicking myself because I have created my own library of the items but I was under the gun and there are a lot of folded chequerplates on the same project so I just continued to use plates. My concern is I do a lot of folded platework for one customer in polished stainless steel so I am very careful with my drawing but never think to check the DXF files, now I will.

I’m on my phone and unable to test this, but I’m thinking you could add a punch mark to the polished surface and create some label rules in your drawing style to place a a big obnoxious note indicating which face is polished.

Maybe there is a chance to shed some light on the issue of this thread.

Is there a rule for the view direction how dxf files for plates and folded plates are created?

I can not imagine that this is just accidental.

Also which of a group of equal plates is used for the generation of the dxf file? The first one?

No marks on the folded plates because these were rectangular so the DXFs were not an issue.

The whole plate issue with the DXFs in regard to chequerplates is due to the creation of the plate, for a poly plate you MUST create the polyline in an anticlockwise direction, then the DXF matches the plate, going clockwise will mirror the plate.

Must be more careful when creating in the future.

Hello,

 

Usually, the view direction in dxf is given by the internal cs of the plate (which can be checked with AstorCommShowLocalCS).

Exceptions to this are cases when there are holes (e.g. punch marks) or attached parts on only one face, in which case that face is chosen as the "top".

The direction in which the polyline is created does indeed matter, as it affects the internal cs of the plate created from that polyline. I can't tell if this is intended or not, but it is a direct consequence of the code written in AS and we don't intend to change this in the foreseeable future.

The plate chosen from a set of identical objects is related to internal implementations in Acad and AS. It may be the first one, but I can think of at least one instance in which this may change (when the object is part of a connection which recreates it on update); it can't be visualized or controlled and we don't recommend basing a workflow on this.
