Managing BOM Templates

Hi Guys,

How do people manage BOM’s with different company logo’s?

It’s a bit embarrassing send a bolt list with the wrong template.

I know how to copy BOM’s and change logo’s but I end up with a long list on the pallet. Can I setup company folders on the pallet? Do I use the Project option to save new BOM’s into? If so how do I access it?

I have search the web but had no luck, I would also like to add a preview of the BOM but I’m using AS 2018 and can’t open the mdf file.

Any help or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

You can see by the screenshot I did manage to add a folder with the one BOM in it but it was a while ago late at night with a bottle of Red.

Hey Dave,

You should create a folder in the BOM editor that contains your company templates. If you select all the templates within that folder (see screenshot), they should show up in the palette. Make sure you close the palette, restart AS and reopen the palette after making changes or the new reports won't show!

Also look at this link if you want to add your own icon...

Hello,

-First, create the image in PNG format

-Place the image at this location C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance Steel 2018\USA\Steel\Support\Toolbars

-Open the "Table Editor" in the management tools

-Click on "Open Database" and load the AstorAddin.mdf file C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Advance Steel 2018\USA\User2\Data

-Use the filter and search for "ReportTypes" and add the file names to columns "Image" and "ImageInactive"

-Open the ReportTemplate and add the file name to column ExamplePicture

-updata your defaults

-close the Templates palette

-close and reopen advance steel

Best,

Tommy

I'm like you, did this many moons ago and can't exactly remember...

Have a look at the attached, I think you might have to add a new category in the actual palette...

Thanks Dart,

I can get the long Right Click to work on the AS tool pallet but not the BOM pallet,

You can see by my screen shot that I managed it some how in the passed, maybe I should crack open another bottle of Red.

Hi @dave,

Not sure if you managed to add a new folder in BOM Editor, following @Anonymous steps.

If not, here are some images that might help:

Please let us know if you have any additional questions or comments.

Best regards,
Emy

Hi @dave,

You would have to go to the table ReportTemplates and set the desired category for the BOM template:

2018-02-09_1721_New_BOM_in_category.png

2018-02-09_1723_New_BOM_in_categ.png

Best regards,
Emy

Replying to an old post.

Is there a way to copy or import over BOM templates from a old pc?

Have the previous template (.rdf file). When I copy it over to the BOM folder to be used in a new 3D model, Advance Steel doesn't recognize the BOM template being there within the editor.

the bom templates are stored in the AstorAddin, if you don't want to migrate the whole database, there's a manual way:

  • open the BOM Editor and select "export lists" from the old pc
  • select the list you want to export
  • on the new one: open the bom editor and select "import"

Hi @TShoe ,

RDF is only a file for the BOM viewer, not a template (double click on RDF, if the program is not found, select its path manually from Program Files / Autodesk / Autocad xxxx / ADVS / BomViewer.exe). If you don't have the original BOM template in the database or exported somewhere (file with Temp extension), you unfortunately have to create new ones according to the RDF template - easy export the RDF from BOM Viewer to Excel (to see the structure) and create a new template in BOM Editor. It's a lot of work, but better then nothing 😁

+++ impossible immediately and miracles within 3 days +++
+++ the only constant is the change +++ stay tuned for more +++
+++ since 03/2023 is Advance Steel in maintenance mode, no further development +++

Appreciate the replies, gents.

Looks like I'll be creating a new template, since the old pc has been wiped.

I'll keep in mind to export the templates before things get wiped clean.
