EXPORTING IFC FILES WITH CUSTOM COLORS MEMBERS.

Hello, everybody.

I have a question with AS exporting ifc. files, which is, if AS can export any structure with colours to identify all the different members of the structure.

That is, for example, beams of one colour, plates of another different colour and, that with all other elements of the structure like screws, anchor bolts, the same thing happens (I attach a standard image of an .ifc where if you can distinguish types of elements with colours, it is from TEKLA).

Is there any way to configure this to work this way?

Thank you and best regards.

Dear @JoseManuel_94

You need to configure the colors of objetcs in the Layer Manager. I recommend to set the color in a separate file and create a "Template" of your Advance Steel project.

Each different member has a color by default. You need to set the color of each element and after that verify the modifications of the object.

"Layer Manager" - you mean layer property manager? I've tried changing and creating multiple layers setting different colors to each layer, and export IFC2x3 and MVD, but still colors are not exported. Am I missing something or is there a setting in Advance Steel management tools? 😕

Hi,

I am having the same issues, I tried changing colors of elements and assigning them via Layers and via Materials, but, either way, when produced, IFC is just grey.

Please help!

Layer Properties has no effect on IFC colors.  AS does not create an IfcColourRgb entity in their IFC files, like Tekla.

This thread is marked as resolved, yet according to the last post it isn't !

Seems like a simple fix, perhaps the janitor can get on it, seeing as nobody else is working on AS.

Same issue here. Really, no solution from autodesk to this problem?

HI,

Are you sure that IFC even has any properties for the appearance of an object? I rather think it does not (but I am not an expert). The appearance is a function of the software opening the IFC file and nothing to do with what Advance Steel exports.

The program that opens the file will likely display objects based on the object type so you need to configure that program.

Advance Steel does not export IFC in color, and this is big disadvantage of the software.
I think if AS does not fix that it will loose it's users. personly do not want to jump to Tekla when I use Autodesk AEC package. I hope Autodesk fix it.

Can you share the solution? If you mean, has the problem been solved?

I have Advance Steel 2024, the latest version, but it still can't export IFC files in color. I even tried synchronizing it with Revit to export IFC files from Revit, but it still converts elements without color. It wouldn't be a good idea to change the material in Revit since it will be used for the production of elements and the building itself with proper material.

When it comes to cladding, there's an option to choose the color if it's galvanized or has an RAAL code, but the appearance is gray in the IFC files.

The second issue with Advance Steel is that importing structural IFC files into it is a pain in the A... I work on projects that are 60 to 70% model-based projects with a requirement for a 3D model in IFC format.

It's unfortunate that Autodesk Advance Steel is still lacking in this area, especially for those of us who use the Autodesk AEC Collection."

I know this is an extra cost, and to be honest I have not tried it, but this IFC exporter for Advance steel seems to be able to export members with colors. Would be interesting if someone has tried it before:

Hi Ingus,

I recently contributed financially to IFCout to have it updated to export more information than the standard exporter. I worked with them quite extensively to improve it. I just haven't had time to post in the forums about it. I have had a lot of success with importing IFC files from IFCout to Revit.

Just to clarify, i contributed to them updating it. But i dont not recieve money for promoting it.

If you do get it and have any issues reach out to them, they were very good to work with. When I approached them and throughout testing with them.

Great, this will add lost of value to a lot of users that have been longing for this functionality.

Indeed, but $500 is a little steep for a program that injects metadata into an IFC.
