BOM header separated from table

Hi,

I'm trying to remove the double line or gap between BOM header and rest of table as outlined in yellow below:

I've tried to edit the BOM dwg template ('Drawing - Structured list' in this case) from the 'BOMtemplate' folder that is used in my drawing prototype with limited success.  For example, I can successfully change text height/colour/style etc in header using the 'Group Edit' tool.  I can then simply eliminate the gap in the dwg template by moving the header down to meet adjacent group linework/border.  This is like 0.4mm or so.  But that particular update doesn't appear in the table when a drawing is created, whereas changes to text does update as per my modifications.  The strange thing is though, that if I manually insert a BOM from 'Insert drawing list' into a drawing (from Labels and Dimensions tab), then it will appear as I modified it without gap like below:

But...when I 'Update List' (from same tab),  the gap comes back again:

I'm obviously doing something wrong, but hoping that Advance Steel will let me make the modification I want to do.  Perhaps I should be creating a completely new BOM template dwg file from scratch?

only updating the table will not work, your steps had to be:

• double click on the table, switch to another template and then back to your changed one
• update the bom list with the update command

the problem is: the bom template on details are handle as blocks, so they will not be changed autoamtic. The way I wrote is "recreate" the block.

Do you need the grouping by lot/phase? otherwise I would delete this grouping maybe too

I tried following your steps (most likely incorrectly on my part..) but still wasn't able to get the table linework to update as wanted.  I'm not sure if you're suggesting that it can still be done or if it's not actually possible.  I wasn't sure what was meant by 'grouping by lot/phase'.

I should add that I'm fairly new to Advance Steel and I'm just trying to get my 'ducks lined up' before I start using AS exclusively and ditch my previous software.  Well at least for detailing anyway.  To be honest, I can live with the appearance of the double line in my assembly sheet BOM.  I'll have plenty more hurdles to worry about I'm sure.  I just like to know that I have control over every (well as many as possible!) detail that is presented on the page.  But like I said, this is one I'm more than happy to let go of for now.

Wise decision to get your ducks lined up before ditching the existing solution.

You might need to update the Prototype with the new template for it to take effect.  It doesn't work like an Xref.

Which software are you moving away from to start using AdS?

I worked with Tekla Structures for several years but I finished up with that in 2014 or so.  I'm born and bred more old school though.  So I'm more comfortable on a drawing board or with AutoCAD.  I'm just a luddite really.  But proudly so.  Haha!

I'm keen to work with Advance Steel (instead of Tekla) as it is more AutoCAD based.  Tekla may have changed, but I found it frustrating that it lacked some simple yet very useful AutoCAD type commands back in the day.  Full credit to Tekla though.  It does a great job too.  I struggled in the past (with Tekla particularly) going from a pure drafting role into a modelling role.  I'm not that much of a dinosaur though.  I'm happy to keep up with the times and ditch some of my drafting mentality in favour of modelling. Hehe

Certainly, you will find many answers here to the questions that you seek.  If you are looking for some ideas of what Advance Steel can do once it is set up I did a video on that recently to demonstrate the difference between straight out of the box compared with a customised system.

I tested it with the Australia content and you're right. It's not working with just changing the template...I'm sure in the germany version it's working, I did this very often, but maybe I'm wrong.
So you had to do one more step:

• delete the bom list on the detail
• purge the blocks for the bom (please only the BOM blocks, the rest is needed in the most cases):
  
• insert the template again and update the list

Once the template is in the prototype I have always had to remove (delete) it from the prototype and add it again to have the updates come through.  I haven't had to purge it from memory.

in general I'm just switching between to templates and update the list, this also work for me

Switching can also work to make it reload, selecting a bolt list from the list and back to a parts list generally works.
