Hi All,
I have AS2017 customised database files for drawing style & drawing process.
I am just wondering how I can transfer that database files to AS2021?
The database files I have are ".mdb" files.

Thanks
Abraham

Hi,

try the Management Tools > Convert Databases command. This takes an MDB database and makes an MDF SQL version next to it. Then back up your existing AS2021 databases, delete the *_log.ldf files and put your converted AS2017 database (the MDF version) in its place.

For almost everything a user customises the only database you should require is AstorAddin.mdf in the User2\Data folder. Maybe then AstorProfiles if you have user sections and so on but Autodesk have changed stuff in here too over the years so you will lose that.

Better than trying to migrate the databases yourself is to use the proper Advance Steel Migration Tool. This finds all your custom data in the old version and copies it into the new version for you. You won't be able to go straight from 2017 to 2021 though as only the last 3 versions are supported. You will need to install and migrate to say 2019 first then from 2019 to 2021.

from AS2017 to AS2021 migration without any issues?

From my point of view: Create them as new. Maybe the AstorAddin could be done by install AS2018 and then migrate from AS2021 these. But if you change something in other databases like AstorDetails, AstorBase and so on the cleanest way is to start with fresh databases.
I know no one will do this, but from experience to apply databases along many versions, is not working without problems. And in the end you will have more work to find, what is maybe not working as just creating the settings as new.
The important one for me would be to have the AstorAddin, there I would maybe give it a try because of new material and so on. If it's just the detailstyles, I would spend one day to create them new. Maybe you start with the AS Version 2017 and then make some settings in the detail styles, in the beginning we all makes mistakes, this is the chance to delete them from the databases =).

AstorRules are the saved joint tables...could be helpful to have them. AstorProfiles /Gratings for the new profiles which are added.

But as I wrote: so much steps of versions are always the start of much work to get the old databases run correctly.

Sorry for the late reply. My apologies.

I have installed as 2018 and went Advancesteel 2018 --> Migrate Content, and then I am getting the message as below.

"There are no previous versions to migrate from".

I think I have to install AS2017, but I can't find the link to install 2017. If anyone knows the link, please forward me.

Is anyone has any other ideas please share.

Thanks

Abraham

Hi,

so to try and add to the previous posts.

I think you maybe able to gain access via you reseller , they maybe able to add it back in, typically only 4 version back of on subs.

in this case if you only have a copy of the database on the MDB format , you can use the management tool to convert that mdb to mdf format.    This tool is found under the table editor.

it will copy the database and create a mdf format in the same location as the source file.
then you would need to move/copy this to you 2018 location( I would rename the original 2018 dB table),  with that place on that location you should then be able to open AS and view the drawing styles/processes.

if this is all good you can use this to migrate the from 2018 to say 2019 then onto 2020.

you will need to be careful because I think they changed some of the tables structures between versions.    It can be a bit of struggle, but I have done this, with a little bit of editing in the background.

i think someone already said it maybe better to recreate style in the new version.

There is possible no quick fix here.

hope these comment help out.

Thanks for the reply.

I have contacted our Advancesteel Reseller, no luck.

They are saying Autodesk retired the 2017 version in March and it is no longer supported for use.

Thanks

Abraham
