Currently, the syncronisation happens in the background with limited feedback. For a bulk upload of data, sometimes the upload seemed to have stalled. It would be nice to still have a manual sync button to force the synchronisation process.
Starting from version 16.4.0.2062, the connector typically responds within 10 seconds when dealing with relatively few files. However, if it involves a mass upload (hundreds or thousands of files and several gigabytes), it may take longer for the synchronization to commence. The upload speed is heavily influenced by the number of files (less dependent on size) and ranges from 0.5GB per hour to 2.5GB per hour.
In version 16.5.0.2083, sometimes speeds of 3 to 4GB per hour are achieved when dealing with relatively few files. This is my personal observation, of course (other factors may come into play, naturally). Having this additional functionality is always preferable, as it can replace the need for stopping and restarting the connector.
I think your suggestion for a manual SYNC button in the Desktop Connector App is an excellent idea. While the Connector app may react quickly, having a manual sync button would provide users with a sense of control and assurance, especially during bulk data uploads. Even though the sync process might be occurring in the background, having the ability to initiate it manually adds a level of transparency and responsiveness that users would appreciate.
