Rendering a luminance image

Rendering a luminance image

Hello,

I just tried the cloud rendering service and the illuminance rendering is great. For my work as a lighting design student it would also be great if there would be a possibility to not only render illuminance images but also luminance images. That would be a major step up and then this could become alomst the only tool you'd need to use as a lighting designer.

So I wanted to ask if this is also a possibility for the future or if it is already on a list for future updates?

Thank you very much for now

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

It's great to know that you have been using A360 rendering for illuminance renders. I wanted to check what you mean by "luminance images" in the context of lighting design. Are you looking for relative luminance, as defined here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relative_luminance

It will be great if you can point us to some links or images of what you are looking for.

Thanks,

Ana

Hello Ana,

thank you very much for your answer.

In lighting design there are mainly two units of measurement you need.

1. First is the light that hits a surface - that is the illuminance -
measured in lux - with that you see how much light hits a surface

2. Second is the light that is reflected by a surface - or how bright
a surface is - this is the luminance - measurd in cd/m2 - with that
you see how the contrasts in a room are spread and how bright a
certain surface is
-> it is mainly what you see in a normal rendering but with the
measurement unit

With just these two measurements you can then derive almost all
indices you need for certain tasks (glare, daylight factor,....)

So a luminance image typically looks like this:

Here is a brief summary and what you normally use the luminance results for:

If you need further help please don't hesitate to ask me and it would
be really great if you could keep me up to date.

Thank you very much for now

Illuminance 3D renderings are not as useful as luminance renderings.  Anyone that has used Ecotect + Radiance knows that rendering a 3D view is primarily to get outputs for luminance values  Thank you Thomas. This is needed.
