Vault 2012 to Vault 2014 Pro Upgrade Questions

I am working on my upgrade from basic 2012 to pro 2014 and have a few questions.

I have already installed SQL 2012 Std on the server per the Advanced Configuration Guide for Vault server 2014 so that should be good to go.

My first question goes to the order of installation, I assume.

  1.  VPS - Vault Server
  2.  Service Pack 1
  3.  DL22258964 - Hot Fix for SP1, Server
  4.  ATC - Vault Subscription Release

I assume that the Subscription release is installed on top of the regular release that has been brought up to SP1, correct?

The next question has to do with Vault naming, I am going from Basic 2012 to Pro 2014 and will be getting there by backing up my 2012 to restore to my 2014. My Vault in Basic 2012 is named ME CVI Vault. Does the new Vault need to have the same name? I have added Pro the the server name and would like to do the same to the new Vault.

Your order of installation should be fine.

You do not need to name the 2014 server the same name as the 2012 server.

Thanks but the second answer was not actually the question that I asked.

You stated that I did not need to name the servers the same and I have not.

I have already name the new server to have Pro in the name.

My question was to the actual name of the Vault that I am using in the ADMS console.

I wish to backup my current Vault named ME CVI Vault in ADMS 2012.

And then restore it to a new Vault named ME CVI Vault Pro in ADMS 2014.

Any issues with that?

There is no issue with renaming the vault is that is what you want to do.  However you will not be able to rename it during the restore process.  You will have to detach the Vault and re-attach it to perform the rename.

Thanks Irvin, I just realized who I was talking to. You and I spoke at AU several times this year.

So that I am clear my process will be:

  1.  Backup my existing 2012 Vault Named ME CVI Vault
  2.  Restore this backup to my new 2014 ADMS
  3.  Detach this Vault from the 2014 ADMS
  4.  Rename the Vault
  5.  Reattach the renamed Vault to 2014 ADMS

Thanks

Hello

  1.  Backup my existing 2012 Vault Named ME CVI Vault
  2.  Restore this backup to my new 2014 ADMS
  3.  Detach this Vault from the 2014 ADMS
  4.  Reattach the Vault to 2014 ADMS (in the attach dialog rename the Vault)

Thank you so I had one extra set in there, the rename is part of the reattach

I just came upon another question in my order of installation.

In reviewing the readme documents for the Subscription Release 1 I notice it states "Make sure all databases are fully migrated to the latest version"

My intention is to install all new in the order that was stated before.

Then I would be restoring a backup from Vault 2012 to this newly installed and patched to the latest Vault Pro 2014.

That being said there should be no data that needs to be migrated as I go through the steps, correct?

I assume that once I have restore the 2012 backup to the 2014 install that it then would be migrated or will the restore process do that?

In step 2, the restore process will require a migration at the end before you can go to step 3.

Thank you that is what I thought.

It is just the statement in the Subscription Release 1 readme about having everything migrated before install that that threw me.

In the original post here I stated the order I intend to install the software and the patches. I assume that through these steps I do not need to worry about the migration statement since I will not have any data yet.

I intend to be restoring the 2012 backup to a New Vault install that has been brought up through that path to Subscription Release 1 - Subscription Release SP1 (which I found out aboput in a different thread).
